A so called TO-Map, because of the T-shaped seas in the O shaped map. This was a very common form of map in the european middle ages. It shows that people in the west where not ignorant of the lands in the east, nor of the round shape of the earth.
In these types of maps, Jerusalem is always at the center. The T-shaped seas are the Mediterranian vertically and the Red Sea, or sometimes the Tigrus and the Nile horizontally. East is above. The one above dates from around 1300, the one below was made by Isidore of Sevilla, and so dates back to the late sixth century.
