Friday, April 14, 2006 (New Delhi):

At least 13 people were injured when two near simultaneous blasts hit Jama Masjid in Old Delhi.

The first explosion took place around 5:20 pm (IST) when devotees were preparing for the evening prayer near a pond used for ablution.

Fifteen minutes later another blast rocked the place, eyewitnesses said. The blasts, which took place near gate number one of the historic masjid, did not damage the structure.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condemned the explosions and asked the people to maintain calm.

NEW DELHI: The Special Cell of Delhi Police will investigate the twin explosions at the historic Jama Masjid on Friday evening, Police Commissioner K K Paul said.

Paul, who visited the spot, said as no craters were found at the place of explosion, low-intensity improvised devices appear to have been used.

He said the Special Cell of Delhi Police has been assigned the investigation into the blasts.

Paul said 12 persons were injured in the blasts, and all of them had been taken to LNJP Hospital.

"There are minor injuries. But one person has a bleeding foot," he said.

He said bomb disposal squads have scoured the Masjid and specialist teams have examined the spot.

VARANASI: A red alert was sounded and security was beefed up on Friday around the vital installations and religious shrines, including the sensitive Kashi Vishvanath and Sankat Mochan temples, in the wake of the explosions in Jama Masjid in New Delhi, police sources said.

As soon as the news of the explosions in Jama Masjid reached here, the senior civil and police officials, including District Magistrate Rajiv Agrawal and Senior Superintendent of Police G K Goswami reviewed security arrangements in the temples, including the Sankat Mochan temple rocked by terror attacks on March 7, and vital government installations, the sources said.

The officials directed the authorities to carry out intensitive petrolling throughout the district with immediate effect, they said.

Additional policemen have been deployed near railway stations, bus stands, airport and public places and units of the bomb disposal squad, dog squad have been put on alert as part of the enhanced security measures in the district, sources said.

Two blasts at the Sankat Mochan Temple and cantonment railway station were carried out on March 7 in which over 20 people were killed and 50 others injured.

NEW DELHI: Two influential Muslim clerics have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resolve the Kashmir issue, saying they would support Congress president Sonia Gandhi's election campaign only if she took concrete steps in this direction.

Syed Sarwar Chisti, secretary of Ajmer's Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti shrine, and Maulana Mohammad Haroon of the All India Tanzeem Aimma-E-Masjid made the appeal in separate letters to the prime minister.

Both were clear in the quid-pro-quo they expected for supporting Gandhi's campaign in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli constituency to return to the Lok Sabha after resigning her seat over the office of profit controversy.

"Our support will only be given if she solves the problems of the people of Kashmir and Muslims, especially the community's socio-economic backwardness," Chisti said.

"We appeal to Sonia Gandhi that if she wants the vote of the Muslim community, she should take concrete steps and measures for solving the Kashmir problem," Haroon said.

Chisti wanted Manmohan Singh to take advantage of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's "stance" as well as the willingness of the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir to initiate "immediate and positive steps" to resolve the issue.

He urged the prime minister to go beyond cosmetic utterances, failing which he apprehended the Kashmir issue would escalate into a deep human tragedy involving Muslims in Kashmir and the rest of the country.

Chisti noted that his message was going out from a shrine where secularism had been practised for 800 years.

"The message is for the solution of the overwhelming problems of the Kashmiri population and not in support of any particular group or leaders. This is a message in the best cause of humanity," he asserted.

Haroon appealed to the Indian and Pakistani governments to expeditiously resolve the Kashmir problem in keeping with the wishes of the people of the state.

Could be more revenge attacks for Varanasi. Varansi or "temple town" of course gets extra protection.

I doubt it Telde, although i must admit i was expeting an I told you so

Tell you the truth i think there's someone out there that wants a riot to happen. I mean imagine it, an important mosque and mandir attacked within a month.

I don't know who and i don't know why, but someone's pushing what may be the right buttons.

I'm glad nobody got killed and the mosque itself wasn't damaged, i admire its architecture.

Update on the Jama Masjid Blasts.

Jama Masjid blasts: Tunda gang probed

NDTV Correspondent

Saturday, April 15, 2006 (New Delhi):

Intelligence sources are questioning members of Abdul Karim Tunda's gang in connection with the twin blasts at Jama Masjid.

Tunda and LeT terrorists were responsible for a series of blasts in Delhi between 1996 and 1998.

The chemicals used in Friday's masjid blasts are identical to the one used by Tunda's gang.

Also, the two men who had been picked up for questioning this morning have now been let out on bail.

TeldeInduz the probe is still on.We don't know who is responsible for the cowardly act. It's a bit premature to jump to any conclusion regarding who is responsible and what was the motive behind the attack.

I started this thread because I  respect all religions and places of worship.I have been to Old Delhi many times. It is a place full of history and wonderful people.

Thanx for your participation so far.I would continue updating this thread.Hope you will continue participating.

Dam politics, I really don't know when they will stop attacking worship places for their political achievements and success.

And I also would like to know what dear Rajput says about this... (please don't tell me that this is too, done by Muslims).

Four picked up for Jama Masjid blastsAdd to Clippings
[ Saturday, April 15, 2006 08:07:12 pmPTI ]

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been picked up from the Jama Masjid area for questioning by the police and Central Security agencies about the two crude bomb blasts at the 17th century mosque last evening.

Official sources said while two were picked up late last evening, another two were picked up during the surveillance around the Jama Masjid this morning.

Among those picked was a man from Bihar who could not explain as to what he was doing around the place. His antecedents where being checked from Bihar.

The other three were the local residents and had been picked up after their activities were found suspicious, the sources said.

The agencies were exploring the possibility of finding some links with Abdul Karim Tunda's gang as the chemical composition -- Pottasium Chlorate and Sulphur mixed with acid -- was used by him during the 1997 blasts in the national capital.

The two chemicals were concealed in a small container at the two places around the water pond inside the historic mosque.

Though the same mixture is used for manufacturing of detonators, the one used on Saturday was completely in its crude form and could only blacken the surface where it was planted, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the police has placed two Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD) at the two gates of the Jama Masjid and the people were screened before entering the premises for offering prayers.

I agree, politics is one thing but places of worship should never be attacked. Regardless of whose they are.
