Who do you scholars think is the best writer of the Elizabethan period. Is it unanimously Shakespeare, or does anyone like Christopher Marlow or Edward de Vere, or anyone else. I just recently read Marlow's Dr. Faustus and found it fascinating.

Well I am a Shakespare fan but not eveyone here is. see: Shakespeare,anyone? but I like Marlow as well.

I think Shakespeare wins simply due to his prolific output - so many of his works have survived (in so many different versions). Additionally, his plays still today - as they did at his time, not only relate a story, but touch the very fundamental human issues in a way that allows almost everyone to relate to the story. How many reworkings of Romeo and Juliet have there been since he first wrote it? Even up through the modern film versions and West Side Story, the tale is still valid and touches a great nuber of people. What genre is Skakespeare best at? Was it his histories, comedies, romance or tragedies?

My favorite plays - Taming of the shrew and Julius Ceaser. I saw it preformed at Stratford a few years ago,it was fabulous. As to which genre, most critical aclaim goes to the tradgedies but I prefer the comedies myself. |

I love MacBeth because it is a study of human greed and how some people can be corrupted so easily with power. Macbeth is perhaps the most enduring of his plays, along with Hamlet because they remain so relevant today.
