I think Khan and Alexander are the 2 greatest generals(military commanders) in the history of mankind and everyone else falls very short in comparison. I believe they maintained a whole package while others had a glaring weakness of some kind...

Genghis Khan (1167 - 1227)

Alexander the Great (356BCE - 323BCE)

Hannibal Barca (247BCE - 183BCE)

Julius Caesar (100BCE - 44BCE)

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 1821)

There are many great leaders who could join this list...

Constantine
Douglas MacArthur
Belisarius
Robert E. Lee
Attila the Hun
Erwin Rommel

Every culture has a few stand out generals of their history .Comparing relatively is too hard to compare. From the west Alexander the great, is the most likely candidiate.China's have many good generals too but li shi min could be their top one.Turko -Mongol have so many great generals its hard to say ,it shard to determine wether they are good generals when commanding great armies they had.Genghis khan was a great emperor ,strategican and leader Subotai was more of a feild battle tactician great. From Arabia Khalid al walid is probaly their top, Jaladin and Baibars come to mind.

1. Janos(John) Hunyadi (1387 - 1456)

2. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536 - 1598)

3. Napoleon Bonaparte (15.08.1769 - 5.05.1821)

4. Julius Caeser (100 - 44 BC)

5. Saladin(Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayub) (1138 - 1193)

Atilla, Genghis Khan and Timur were three bloodthirsty monsters, with very big armies of ferocious creatures. This is my opinion.

While not a 'Top-5' general, one of the most significant generals in history would have to go to Leonidas of Sparta.

He lost the battle (thermopylae).  No question.   What he DID though, was take command of 300 warriors (and perhaps another 1,000 'allies') and hold off for THREE DAYS the greatest army on Earth.

and he WON the first 2 days.

1300 (and 1,000 were non-reliable mercs) vs. the core of the Persian army, 100,000 strong.  for 3 days.

THAT'S a leader.

and even though he lost, he may have very well ensured the survival of western civilization as a whole... even in defeat.  He weakened and demoralized the Persian forces to a point where their subsequent battles they were too weak to win against the Athenians.

Those preserving democracy, art, philosophy, architecture, etc.

"Come back with this shield, or on it."  The Spartan way.

I think that the top five generals of all time are:
1. Subedei Bahadur
2.Alexander the great
3. Horatio Nelson ( he was a British admiral but he rocked look up the battle of the Nile)
4.Julius
5. wellington(you can't put Napolean ahead of him wehn he beat napolean at waterloo)

the reason i think Subedei is the best is because of the campaign against the Khwarizm, and the battle of Khalka river, where he defeated an army of 80,000 with only 20,000

Another thing the reason hannible isn't up in my five is he knew how to win a battle but was poor at using his victories.

I'm afraid thats a misconception, this thread deals with the issue of Hannibals strategic ability with a focus on why he did not march on Rome:  http://www.allempires.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=18816

To my knowledge there were no mercenaries on the Greek side at Thermopylae, aside from the Helot slaves I believe virtually all troops were standard greek citizen soldiers sent by thier state. furtheremore there were initially many times more than 1300 and even after Leonidas dissmissed most of his army there was more than this number. on a final note all seven hundred Thespian soldiers fought to the death willingly alongside the 300 spartens......... I would call that pretty reliable.

Regards, Praetor.

As this post was unprovoked, and unnecessary. It has earned Jagiello an official warning for Trolling amongst other violations.

so dont consider turkish forumers subjective if they post turkic generals.you are posting european/aryan generals because you are european, turks are posting turko-mongolian generals because they are turks.there is no difference between them and you.

btw Hannibal is a phoenician which is considered an aryan nation(at least panf considers even thought they speak a semitic language).I dont mention his skin colour but his nation.

No they are not a aryan nation. Phoenicians are a semitic nation, language and culture. They have nothing to do with the Indo-European family, if thats what you mean by 'Aryan'.
