Topic: Is gambling really sin...? Posted: 07-Dec-2007 at 19:56 |
Hi Ahmed,
It really boils down to personal liberty here. Nobody forces you to gamble or take part in the national lottery. So, as long as your actions are not directly detrimental to others, I think it is justified. Saying that, I don't gamble at all, but I still don't think it is sinful to do so..

It depends on how you define sin. I know gambling can sometimes bring in the evil element of society which can include prostitution, organized crime, drug and alcohol abuse, and many other ills, such as, addictions to gambling itself. But, we all have a free will to choose and other than the state lotto once in a while I do not gamble with money.

The Koranic position is somewhat complicated. To invest money to get a secure return (as in putting money on deposit in an interest-bearing account) is sinful, as usury.
A business enterprise is only permissible if there is an element of risk. Therefore buying shares in IBM is OK (or even Enron :-( ) because they may go up or down.
This very much affects where Islamic-licensed insurance companies can invest their premiums, and also the type of policies they may sell.
(and i've no doubt people will contest that .
Irresponsible gambling however is seen as sinful.

I find some measure of ridiculousness in proscribing something because "one may be tempted to do wrong," as per hugo's comment. Every single thing in the world has the potential to be overdone; should we condemn eating as a sin, and legislate against it, because one may become obese? Should we outlaw alcohol because some certain few may become alcoholics? I mean, honestly, allow people to make their own choices- if they screw up, they screw up, but don't spoil it for everyone. The majority of gamblers are responsible, just as the majority of drinkers are not alcoholics, and the majority of eaters (i.e. everyone) are not chronically obese. It's all up to the individual. But the paternal "you may be tempted so don't even try it" malarky is unfair, repressive even, to the vast majority.
