“There is another wonder:/, which/it is (the) confluence/oper (of) pool/lake/stagnum/Linn/L(l)ynn Lyuan/Liuan/Livan /Lliwan/Llifan/Llyw(an);/. the oper/mouth of this/that river flows into the Severn, and when (both) the Severn is flooded at/to (The) Teared [the bore]/high tide, and the sea (is) floods/flooded similarly/likewise in(to) the afore mentioned/said mouth of the river, and/bothit is received in(to) the lake/pool/waters of the mouth/estuary like/inthemodeof a whirlpool(,) and the sea does not advance/rush up;/. And/thereis a bank/shore (exists) near/beside the river, and solongas/whenever the Severn is flooded at/to The Teared[thebore]/hightide that/this bank/shore is not covered, and when the sea and (the) Severn ebbs/recede, then/atthattime lake Liuan throwsup/vomits everthing/allthatithas devoured/swallowed from the sea and (both) that bank/shore is covered(,) and (in the) like(ness of) a mountain in one wave it throwsup/spews and bursts/breaks. And if (there was) the army of the wholeregion/country weretobethere,/,inthemidstof where it is, and it directed its face against the wave, even the army the wave carries off through the force, by fluid full clothes. “He told him likewise of another pond in Wales, near the Severn, called by the country people Linligwan, into which when the sea flows, it receives it in the manner of a gulf*, but so as to swallow up the tide, and never be filled, or have its banks covered by it. But at the ebbing of the sea, it throws out the waters which it had swallowed, as high as a mountain, and at last dashes and covers the banks with them. In the meantime, if all the people of that country should stand near with their faces towards it, and happened to have their clothes sprinkled with the dashing of the waves, they would hardly, if at all, escape being swallowed up by the pond*. But with their backs towards it, they need not fear being dashed, though they stood upon the very banks*.” (- Geoffrey of Monmouth.)
"There is a lake near the Severn, called the Lake of Llion, which swallows all the water that flows into it at the tide of flood, without any visible increase; but at the tide of ebb, it swells up like a mountain, and pours its waters over its banks, so that whoever stands near it at this time, must run the risk of being overwhelmed." (- "Arthur" / British Chronicle(s) / Myv. Arch.)
Llyn Liuan matches Ebbsfleet/Richborough/Rutupi [city of the legion].
Note for the orthodox candidate they say "[No one knows where linn liuan is"], "doesn't help us much".
(i) name match?: Lynn Liuan is confirmed connected with 'city of the legion' [Richborough] by correspondence with the Leominster & llan Llieni Severn in the '12 Monasteries' list (which seems to match the 12 battles & 9 south-east sites). "Caerleon between Aber Gwy & Linn Lliwan"? More possible confirmation of Lynn Liuan being connected with 'city of the legion' is that river Leveney / Langors is associated with an ancient/past city (see below) (of which city there is no trace there at that Welsh site). [I'm not sure if the (linn) Liuan/Ligwan name may match (city of the) legion & (city of) lions?] [Not sure if Liuan could connect with llwyn "wood/grove"? Rutupi was thought to be a wood in a Roman source.]
(ii) ebbs/wave/bore etc match: The ebbs/wave/etc matches the ebbsfleet/Rutupi/Richborough area then. Compare the 9th wave Peryddon where Gawain/Gwalchmai was buried. They say Gawain died/buried at Rutupi (or Dover). Maybe also compare Langors(e) “swallowed up an ancient city" / Leveney "was in times past a city which being swallowed up.... ... high waves”. The fastness(es) of Dissethach of the Pa Gur might link with this too? Also compare Lyonesse/'city of lions'/Logres? [I'm not sure if Rocabarraigh could connect with Richborough and linn Liuan?]
(iii) army/multitude match: The army of the whole region matches 'city of the legion' & Rutupi (legio ii Augusta).
(iv) river (mouth) match: the river is presumably the (Wantsum-)Stour.
(v) "Severn"?: There is evidence that the "Severn/Sabrina/Habren/Sabre/Hauren/Havren" was for more/other waters around Britain than just the modern Severn, eg: "the 7 mouths of the Severn" (and "the river Usk burn 7 months"). Sources say 2 (or 3) main/great rivers like arms of Britain Severn & Thames (& Humber / Tay / De). "Locrin by Estrildis has [daughter] Sabre". Locrin (Loegria) may link with Logres/'city of lions'? [and/or with lake Lucrinus famous for oysters (like Rutupi)?] ("Locrin possessed the middle part" ~ Richborough [city of the legion] is middle of 3x3 battle sites?) Caerosc/'the city of legions' on usk near Severn. The city of the legion is Rutupi/Richborough (where was legio ii Augusta from Caerleon). [Severn ~ seven? Severn ~ Severus? estrildis ~ stour?]
(vi) number/order match: 6th wonder Linn Liuan matches 6th battle site 'city of the legion' [Richborough]. The previous Wonder may match Dover [Guinnion]. The next Wonder seemingly matches one or other of our 9 battle sites in the south-east, maybe nearby.
(vii.) the 4 wonders which we had certainly matched with Richborough are "coincidentally" all omited in the Irish version.
litus might connect with Saxon Shore?
The main location candidates of others &/or ours for Linn Liuan include: whirlpool near mouth of the River Taff at cardiff bay/penarth highest tides? {Llangors(e) Lake / Llyn Savaddan/ Brecenanmere /Brecinau-mere/ Talyllyn Pool & river Llynfi/Lh-un-vi (in the Brecon Beacons, Hoare)? / poole & little river Leveney (Brechnock / Castle Dinas / Blean Leveney Castle, Camden/Holland)?} the Severn bore (2nd highest tidal range in the world)? the Nedern and Troggy Brook? a whirlpool near Southbrook Farm (at Sudbrook, near the Troggy)? Ebbsfleet/Richborough? St Levan? llwyn hen flan (sts lives)? Linnuis? Leuis Hamo? river Lavant (Portsmouth area)? Moses & red sea? 'dyke of Liuluuin' (Sts Lives)? Llynn Lliwan ('Culhwch and Olwen')? hypothetical/forgotten Saint Lluan / Ffynnon L(l)uan & ruined Chapel Llanlluan ("Chapel of the Owls", just outside Penrhiwgoch, north of Swansea, near the estuaries of Carmarthen Bay)? st Llonio (drowning)? Baraliuen? the Cinluin? Llyn Llion ? a small pool at Chepstow which ebbs and flows contrary to the tides [ebb-and-flow well at Woodfield (a house near Chepstow bridge)]? Troggy/Nedern? lake (of) Llion?
