Eventually i will be inspired to venture deep into the Mars City Underground. Just admiring the snazzy graphics at the same time i am getting a creepy feeling 1.0 needs a patching. Just a hunch on the little clitches i have seen so far.

 NEW UNIT:

A new unit since it we were out, Macedonian Cavalry.

They have spear and sword and no shield. It says that "when used to repeatedly charge enemy units they can have a tremendous cumulative effect". I dont know what that means since they have no stirrups. Unit looks ok i guess.

Superior/ Can Form Wedge

the elmet is weird...and if im not mistaken helenistic or at least greek cavalry used large shields at this time, not sure if Macs did too...

but just today a new freak's gone online, macedonian camelridder????  this is a travesty is all I can say...and how are they supposed to form a cantabrian circle if they're not even horse archers?

Temujin, they've made a typo. They've probably mixed the Numidian camel archer and the Macedonian horse rider or something.

I just went to look at it and i must say i am perplexed at this one.

Not only does the name not make sense, the description also.

Superior?  Hardy( well ok)  Cantabrian Circle..

its rediculously large and going to stomp legions. They should have brought the Forest Elephants back to life.

Ok, my life is over.

Just got through with the battle of Trebia and the game is unreal.Played it with my old GF3 64mb card and it runs better than MTW in higher detail if you can believe it. The playability is a dream and it has great options.

Some minor details bugged me like the green selection arrows for the units, stupid voices and small units but edited them in the text file. Also gave the game a more rustic shade by changing my card settings.

Temujin is going to become unhinged with the inaccuracies but he will get over it.      ..good job CA!

if you cant wait and have to play as the Romans, you can install the files out of this zip into your ACTIVISION/ROME TOTAL WAR-DEMO/DATA/PACK. click the bat file start the game and you can select the Romans.

http://personal.inet.fi/koti/jkourula/asromans.zip - http://personal.inet.fi/koti/jkourula/asromans.zip

also, i have figured out that you can reset your camera mode in the game options to MTW style. Some reconfiguration may be necessary.

A new mod is done to the game!!

a.) skip intro scene from Battle of Trebia
b.) have the Roman army start BEFORE the the crossing of the river.
c.) instantly adds the Carthaginian sacred band to Carthage
d.) extend duration of battle for at least 20 more minutes. (by turning morale off, a new option)

Over here:
http://www.totalwarcenter.com/downloads/db/index.php?mod=1 6

And look at all these mods!
http://www.totalwarcenter.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6 982&st=0

I recommend the play as Gauls in the tutorial one. It's a great battle.

One battle and one tutorial battle. I understand that adding modifications can open some new possibilities.

In any case, the full version will be out in ten days, so just buy it once it comes out.
If you don't buy it, I'll just have to send a pirated copy to Wales.

Check this out it's a faction and unit porfile from IGN.com about RTW. The roman one is 19 pages long but don't let that dicourage you it has 10 pages for all the temples to the gods. 12 major roman gods+5 levels for each temple=lota of pages. There are also profile on the Britons, Carthaginians, Seleucids, Egyptians, and the Parthians. The Parthians I found out are Zoroastrians in the game, and that they are as close to a persian faction as RTW gets, they have persian cavalry as a unit.

PS before anyone jumps down my throat I know next to nothing about the Partians except for the partian shot cav archer manuver

lol I gots an AAR for ya guyz

I play as the Egyptians, versus the Romans, in custom battle, I give th eromans all the best stuff just to see if I can beat them as Egypt, its night time in the desert....

I have a strang eposition, I have powerful phalanxes and cavlary on my flanks and only a thin line of bowmen in the center, naturall the comp goes fo the center as I prolly would do if I were them.

They break through but get all clumped up killing my bowmen, so I converge the phalanx on them, then when they are unorganized my hidden chariots charge home!  BAM, only 200 Romasn left out of maxed out forces!  Pharoah Shukashukashamaka triumphs over Bigus Dickus once again!

The Scipii are terribly weak in my campaign. All they got is Campania, Sicily and the province south of Carthago. Meanwhile I've wiped out the Gauls and currently I'm cleaning up the last provinces of Carthago.

You beat the imperial campaign as one of the roman factions is how you unlock the rest of the factions minus, Sythia, Dacia, Spain, Thrace, Pontus, Armenia, Numidia, and the senate/rebels.

The easy way to beat the imperial campagin is as the house of Julii in their short campagin their goal is crush the gauls. Also don't get to excited about playing the parthians just yet if you have little experience with total war games the parthians will be a little too much for you. As they are really hard to play as. The reason being their starting position and their goals. There starting position is hard because the tribus sakae province (most city and province names are in latin) which you start with is so far from media (where Susa your capital is located) that it is always rebellious and unprofitable. The parthians goals are to crush or outlast the seleucids and Armenia. This is hard because the Seleucids have the strongest economy in the game next to egypt and that there armies are based on the macedonian phalanxes of Alexander. Which when pitted against the light infantry and strong cavalry of parthia and you get a recipy for defeat. Oh and speaking of egypt they always show up to be a pain in your ass too. So as parthia you end up fighting 2 of the strongest economies in the game, which translates into endless armies coming and besieging your cities.

ah yes, noticed that thread but haven't watched it yet...

from what I've seen the contribution by the historical faction are the same i would give, but they lack on eastern factions...Cataphract camels did exist? WTF?

well, the first thing they should do is completely overhauling the egyptians, that would already give the game much mroe authencity, then next change the non-mediterranean factions of europe so they won't look like a stereotypical mass of random barbarians that only have diferent special untis etc...the worst faction after the Ptolemies are probably the Scythians...should probably replaced by Sarmatians, because Scythians dissappeared right after the game starts off, and the untis are of course crap too, they look lke mongols and the female units are basically crap, one unit is ok, but not making a big deal of the Amazon stuff...

Egypt is going to get some serious attention,
Never had heard anything about Cataphract camels either, strange unit is ok i guess. Skreechers are bad, they look like they are going to the mall. I think my new most hated freak is the Arcani, they did exist but look at them. Also, if not removed, they perhaps should be redone and made into agents.

Did you see the ones someone put on horses?

cat,

yeah, i've seen them mounted arcani)...of course most barbarian units should be overhauled, especially the screeching/chanting of some units...instead they can give the barbarian swordsmen wedge formation to give them an advantage over the Romans.

btw, the provinces name is Locus Gepidae...I always wondered what that name means

Onager is Onager

actually it was quite funny, I just laid siege on Carthage, then a single cavalry-unit attacked my rear and the carthaginian garrison came out as reinforcements...the rest is legend written in the sands of Dune...eh, I mean Tunisia

and this is what happened: I defeated the cavalry unit, then i made a complete U-turn with my army to face the garrison, I noticed that the general stayed way behind the main army, so i took both generals that i've posted on the flansk to outflank the carths and killed their general as well as their only cavalry unit that rushed in to save their idiotic general but got slaughtered too. in the meantime the two units of elephants slaughtered my infantry (I'm actually suprised there were that many survivors) while my cavalry did their job on their two units of lybian speamren and some units of Iberian infantry. i charged a unit of skirmishers with my generals and then dispersed the carth army and charged single infantry units with groups of cavalry that have by now seriously decimated them with their javelins. in the end only the elephants stayed alive...

The don't really leave their gate open, but It's often quite easy to sneak inside together with routing enemy units.

I think the computer AI should leave their army inside a city when the attackers have to way to breach through the walls.

why Numidians? Strange faction to start off this so highly anticipated game with.

thats not my firt campaign actually, firt i started as Julii, btu very soon i got bored, they're too easy and I actually never lked roman warfare much, so after i got the allunlocked mod i started as scythians, i really liked them but in one battle my general and leader was killed by 60 remainign german spearmen out of an army of 300 or more, I ahd to go melee becasue I run out of arrows. hell, i killed over 200 enemies but in the melee my whole amry of 200 horsearchers got killed by 60 germans not even commanded by a real general! so i quit...
then today i started as parthians, but one of my family memebrs got killed very early when i transfered him to another town. in the narrow valleys he got trapped between a small rebel army and the border of the map, so i sallied out with the garrison of the city to defeat the few rebels, ut my general unit whic was commanded by the Ai got in as reinforcement and attacked them head on and got killed. I quit...
so, I thought about what to play next, Thracians are a too historical inaccurate to be played and armenians start with only one provicne i think, so i choose Numidians, so I have at least a pretty accurate desert army. and what's actually wrong with them? they were the elite unit of hannibals army...

I must also adress soem thing apart from the historical stuff...

first, i don't get the whole finance system, the finacne-tab soemtimes tell be i get negative income but my treasury is increasing nevertheless. also, when you put buildings or units in the construction queue, the price for it is immediately withdrawn from the treasury...I find that weird, what's that queue actualy good for when you don't have the money to actually put in a line of untis?

second, I was playign Scythians and got a plague in oen of my cities (if you can even call it like that) but sicne i'm "barbarian", i cannot build canalisation so there's nothign i could hae done, and every round my population and sodleirs died like mad. and talkign abotu realism, where's a disease mroe likely to apear? in a large overcrowded city or a small village?

third, i'm completely unused of the new strategic map. it takes hours for diplomats and other startegic untis to reach the final location. ambushes are weird, I mean how can complete armies hide in such small forrests? and one time i was surroudned with my single roman general (i was again transferign governours) and i could not retreat! yes, even though i managed to evade the main gaul body and reacht he red line, i could NOT press the retreat-button!  and the AI seem to do it as often as possible (ambushing) even in own territory. then, why are there always those small rebel armies appearing in my own territory? how do i prevent that? they're annyoign as hell. and what about those governour thign at all? why the hell do they have to stay in the city? i need commander for armies? and what about the new spy thing and outposts? in medieval you could actualyl see everythign in your province, but here large provinces are completely covered with fog, i don't know what's goign on in my ow provicnes! soemtimes there are rebels in completely remote parts of my provicnes and i don't notice them for years ebcasue i can't see them! and spies are now annyoing as hell, in medieval and shogun you could easily prevent your provicnes from beign infiltrated but now you're completely off-guard, you have to spend huge sums on coutner-spies and offensive spies, then, you have to build numerous of those watchtower for one provicne alone, and they're mroe expensive than in medieval and shogun. and i some battles, the losing army sometimes retreats in a completely ridiculous direction.

well, that's quite a lot to complain about the strategical map and i hope it's just that I'm not yet used to it, but right now I'm pretty annyoed by it!

your such a quitter!

the irregularities in the finances may be due to corruption. I understand that some of it actually comes back to you but am not completely sure about that.Time will tell. You can make diplomats and such go faster on the map by hitting your space bar or double-right click at the command, or if that is not exactly what you are saying keep some dispatched in different parts.

i'm not a quitter, i lost a good general and my libyan province to egypt but i lost it in fair combat, unlike the two previous examples....and ask mast about his longest campaign and you'll see who the quitter is...

well, i think the main problem with the new finance system is that the money get's immediately withdrawn from your treasury and the computer counts in the balance of the expended money already in next round's profit or something...the new economy model is a complete mistery to me yet...

btw, did you saw the new Res Romanae yet? and have you noticed any differences with the tweaked elephants? i wodner why they haven't adressed the wardogs first...

yeah not only, Numidans aren't black, Scythian heavy cav looks like Mongols, the Germanic special units have more war-paint as a normal Sioux and the Parthians are depicted as Arabs, Achaemenids and Sassanids but not as parthians...

I saw it now! Victoria is the love of my life, and now she is going to battle with me.    she is who i have as my Org avatar.

Use her tactics, and maybe you wont have to quit.

I don't need help in battles, all i need are enough arrows for my horsies and control over reinforcements...at least they shouldn't act as suicide bombers...

Had a mercenary unit of Scyth horsemen and they Kamakazied some pike men.

The best way to use reinforcements is too have them near but lead by a captain. They will wait for you.

I downloaded some tga files and got my helmets shiny like in your screenshot earlier finally.
I guess i should try the patch now.

no problem with diplomacy, just found out that the AI abuses the red border line of the battle map, they always corner my ranged mounted troops and kill them in melee, this happened already three times alone with my generals unit!

anyways, started new campaign with Parthia, after I took Carthage with Numidians so early I felt like everythings done, i'll continue it another day.

Parthia has crap infantry, better to use their cavalry instead.

they have sligners, archers and two sorts of spearmen, one has a pretty good defense, the others has better attack values, but as Tobie already pointed out they're crap and so far i can only have simple horsearchers...i use them as cheap garrison units however...

btw me and Mast had 7 online battles this night, of course he owned me big time I only won the game where i had egypt and the pharaonic Über-archers slaughtered his dacians en masse....he also took screenshots, maybe he posts some here...
