In past centuries, medicos made extensive use of leeches to "bleed" bad blood from patients, and maggots to eat infected flesh from around wounds.

To my horror, I heard a television panel recently discussing the relative merits of re-introducing the same methodologies into modern medicine, particularly for those poor countries where medication is scarce and doctors even more so.

The points being made by this expert panel included the efficacy of maggot use to keep wounds clean of infected or dead tissue, and the use of leeches to relieve pressure from swollen extremities...!

How would you feel to have a bunch of maggots munching away on your flesh?

ouch.
but i think these things are still in the clinical trial stages and will still need time to go under full-fledged operation in controlled environments
