The Turkic Pantheon, according to Marvel comics
http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/godsmongolian.htm - http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/godsmongolian.htm

I think this project has just done to able to say we did it. It is not a good work. I can't see much creativity, but putting winged-horse(accepting that it is not unique for greek culture) and wolf also blue skinned god idea is nice.Wink

They have also similar works for other god version

Tengri is Skygod-Göktanrı, that's why he is blue
Erlik is underground god, it is similar with Hades
Ulgen/Ülgen is similar with Baldr. He is god of goodness. He is also like Prometheus. He helps humanity
Asena is she-wolf like in Roman mthys. When all Turk died, she grew up one Turkish boy who dosn't have arms and legs. Look at Destan of "Türeyiş"

but I don't know other gods
Ay is moon goddess
Koyash is sun god

In Turkey, there are not much people who able to talk about mythology. If you find someone can, that will be Greek one, not Turkic mythology. I was thinking like you such a few years ago but now I don't think like that way. we don't know much. The main sources are legends.

I don't think there is a someone in Turkey who associate wolf with love and family. Turks look at the wolf figure like lion. just in power case.

İtbaraks are wolf-men who lived in north-west of Oghuz lands and they are enemies, but Asena is not like that it is holy beast, guide creature. Like Tulpar, they are not god

Judist symbol Menorah is also symbol for burning bush in Mt Sinai and also there is other type whish has 9 branches ( Hanukkah) instead of 7 as in Menorah.

According to Turkish myths, Kayra han create a tree(pine or beech) and it has nine branches. The first nine human tribs come to this tree. I were Turkic pagan, I would buy one of them to symbolise my belief. Big smile

Sea Gods

Ak Ana (mother white), goddess of  sea. She is one who gives the idea of creation, but she is like Gaia or Rhea. a little bit pasif character. Her  symbol is white deer. She is like marmaid, has a fish tail. Sometimes  she is wife of

Ak Ata (father white), a sea god. He has iron bow. Iron symbolizes power. He can turn a fish

Su Ata (father water), this is river and lake god. This is general name so, there is no seperate names for each river as in greek myhts. When someone is drowned, people say "Su ata took him" He also hates people who pollute the waters. You should throw a whole bread into the water to make him happy. Also when a bride go to far away. She has to be introduce local Su ata.  That's why people throw the bride into the water.

Su Ana (mother water), wife of Su Ata. She likes shores and get out of the water. She has long black hairs and combs her hair with golden comb

Su İyesi: the name for Nymph in Turkic myhts

This is a fascinating subject, thank you for sharing.
I would like to learn more about Asena...AFAIK after taking care of a boy without arms and legs she became pregnant by him and gave birth to Bumin, the first khan of the Gokturks. So, as I see it, this means that Asena was seen as a mother off all Turks...is that right? I was told that the female members of the Grey Wolves are called symbolically Asena; as I see it as a symbol of a mythical rebirth, something like situation oneself into the "sacred space" /after my favourite Eliade/.

The wolf is a very strong archetypal image for quite a few different cultures - the Romans, as I recall some Native American tribes, the Serbs /a polar wolf was seen as their ancestor, I'm talking here about South Slavic pagan mythology/, in Ukraine a white wolf is a forest spirit, turning people in wolves is a motif in the Slavic paganism that became a frequent motif in the fairy tales; not to forget the medieval European wolf/turning motif that continues...into today's mass novel/movie culture.

I'm surprised they didn't use Umai. She was a more important goddess than the moon.

Koyash is an odd one. I've only seen that name in a few places. A more common name I've seen for the sun god was Kun. The Mongols called it Naran Eke (mother sun).

I agree you. Umai is like Turkish Hera. She is great godness also as Hera, she is related with birth

Maybe you think that Central Asia is totally desert but it is also cold and Turkic people also have own believes about it.

Russians have recreated new Santa with using old slavic tales
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ded_Moroz - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ded_Moroz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snegurochka - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snegurochka
İsim: ded_moroz_snegurochka.jpg Görüntüleme: 25 Büyüklük: 54,5 KB (Kilobyte)

and Turkic countries did what Russians had done before and they turned Russian Santa into Turkic Santa

*Ayaz(Ayas) Ata- Ak Ayaz - Şaxta Baba: Ayaz is world which means cold but it just uses for weather, especially for night and winter. Ata-Baba means father, ak means white. He helped poor, hungry people in winter.  He is connected with moon and moonlight

*Kar Kız(Snow Girl):She is daughter or grand daughter of Ayaz Ata

As you know, Orion is easy to find constellation in winter (I think most of us live in northern hemisphere). Orion has seven bright stars and Turks believes that these are seven holes in sky. Ayaz Ata blows cold winds with using these holes.

In my opinion, they should be clear about colours, Russians can use blue and Turks can be use white. Give the red to Santa Wink

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lamp I have an idea for next christmas: a new anime

St Nicolas took the hope which came from Pandora's box and he divided it into three pieces and hided them. Evil creature or creatures(they can be underground gods: Hades-Erklik and Hell) try to find them and make humanity hopeless. Three old men who have opposite characters Santa with Russian and Turkic versions have to join force to save the world Big smile

I'm not even sure who "Kuara" is. There's a Mongol god of rain called Qura Khan, maybe they screwed up the spelling.

Erlik looks like Shredder from the teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Even some myths, Tengri and Kayra is same person, in some myhts Kayra and Ulgen. People can change the orginal names so you can't decide which one is true.

I don't prefer to give a shape to Tengri as said in wiki,
"[[Tengri]] is one of the names for the primary chief deity in the religion of the early Turkic people. The words [[Tengri]] and [[Sky]] were synonyms. It is unknown how Tengri looks like."

By contrast, someone can image him a old mucular guy who holds a thunder like Zeus

Erlik and Loki both have horn in some descriptions. It is quite interesting. However there is no horned Loki in modern era. Does Loki really have horn? and why Hollywood chooses current figure instead of Loki in modern era.

 Lokistone

But in modern are, there is no horn

We have talked about Turkic Santa and now Turkic Christmas

21-24 December are the longest nights so these days are holy in many culture.

As Persian Yalda, Turks have own special festival for it. It is Nardugan. It means "sun is rising" White pine tree is also symbol of this festival.

Normally, There is no Christmas ceremony in Turkey(without minorities). Turks celebrate new year. Santa and  illuminating tree is part of new year celebrations, but even there is huge resist against it. New year celebrations seems like Christmas for religious Turks. By contrastly they have new enemy now. Big smile Nardugan has started to celebrate in Turkey for a few years. Small local goverment prepared events for it in past years, but it is for common in Central Asia and Russia(Tataristan)

"For the Bulgars of the Volga-Kama region, the victory of light over darkness (typical for the Indo-Iranian worldview) represented probably their most ancient holiday, whose date corresponded to the Indo-Iranian celebration of Mitra. Over countless generations, their nation kept the memory alive of how Alp Nardugan, the natural spirit responsible for providing his people with abundant crops, had confronted the malicious spirits whose aim it was to block out the sun to mankind. Taking the form of a rook, Nardugan victoriously returned the sun’s warm rays to the wintery world below, sending his scorched body plummeting to the earth; where his jet-black feathers were transformed into steppe horses dark as the night. Recognizing his bravery and selflessness, the supreme Tangra granted him a new life, and so the rook appears each year to signal the beginning of Spring, the re-awakening of the living earth.....

...In Tatarstan, for Christian and Muslim Tatars alike, Nardugan Beyrem is again gaining a significant cultural importance. Exclusively rural in previous centuries, in Naberezhnye Chelny, the holiday is today seen as the vivid embodiment of the nation’s glorious past, especially for Kereshen Tatars, who celebrate it at the same time as Orthodox Epiphany. It is worthy to not that the Keresheni are experiencing a revival of culture and a rejuvenation of religious fellowship not unlike their Muslim brethren following the breakup of the Soviet Union. For Muslim Tatars, Nardugan remains a largely secular, cultural holiday. The theater performances are the main event, among which are “Nardugan Kureneshe” and “Shaytan Tue,” and activities including a competition for the most delicious pancake and the burning of small ritual fires. Those in attendance can also witness the talents of Tatarstan’s soloists and folk music ensembles, who make their way from as far as Samara and Bashkortostan."

http://kazanherald.com/2012/12/25/nardugan_beyrem/ - http://kazanherald.com/2012/12/25/nardugan_beyrem/

"Day of a winter solstice, on December, 22 (nardugan) celebrated everywhere because from this day duration days starts to increase. To date of a winter solstice the important place was allocated{removed}, similarly modern New Year's for it is day when the sun finishes the annual cycle and should come back again. Day of a winter solstice named " small New year " (Nardugan).

On holiday Nardugan in all houses of the woman prepared for celebratory dishes. In the morning of the man made a sacrifice to spirits of ancestors and spirits - houses for well-being of family in the expired year and asked about its{her} prosperity in the future. After sacrifices to spirits of ancestors members of family with its full complement were present at a celebratory feast. After a dinner all making related, neighbours left on street and fun, games, dancings began. People, having formed a circle, went around of fur-trees on a course of the sun. Thus, typed{collected} vital energy for overcoming the stayed winter season."

Blackgirls
They destroy shaman's focus, when he prays. They use own sexual charm.

Just two of them has a name
*Kiştey Ana(she has eight eye but I don't know why) some sources say that she can turn into black fox.
*Erke Hanım(Sultan/Solton) Erk means power

Blackboys
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara%C5%9F_Han - Karaş Han    : God of Darkness, he has black snakes
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mat%C4%B1r_Han - Matır Han      : Fearless war god. He knows as stone wrist. Wrist is apower symbol, like in arm wrestling. There is also an idiom in Turkish. When you beat someone, you can say "I curled his wrist" but you can't curl stone, can you?
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%9E%C4%B1ngay_Han - Şıngay Han  : It is like Eris. God of Chaos. In modern Turkish, we use word çıngar instead of chaos/noise. When a Turkish women say I will make çıngar if you don't leave, it means she will yell and call police Big smile
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6m%C3%BCr_Han - Kömür Han  : Kömür means also coal. This guy wears black and important god of Erlik. Kömür han is second ruler of Turkic underground
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad%C4%B1%C5%9F_Han - Badış Han    :  God of disease and diasters, he was one arm which has nine people power
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaba%C5%9F_Han - Yabaş Han    : A god who is between black shaman and Erlik han.
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temir_Han - Temir Han    :Demir means iron so he is Turkic Hephaistos. He is the one who teachs the smithery to humanity. He has one eye
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/U%C3%A7ar_Han - Uçar Han      :God of bad news and spys
https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerey_Han - Kerey Han   :He is anothor Eris

I am learning this from you. Erlik and Bear Big smile

Deer = Ak Ana, she has horn like deer
Huma Bird (or somekind of mythological bird) = Umay
Swan = Ayızıt (Goddess of Beauty)

These are first things which I can remember

and yes wolf is animal of goktengri

do we have sacrifice cultures (human one) or tattoos

*Ancient Turks were buring their horse when horse owner died

*There is a kind of sacrifice which is bloodless. Let an animal go to be free. People when choose one of the animals, they don't use its wool and milk or it doesn't use for carring. In proper time they let it go

*Human sacrifice isseu isn't clear, so source say it is forbiden but some sources says it is tradition

Stories about human sacrifice
:Goktengri and Ak Ana(Sea Goddnes) meet in a cave. Ak ana goes there in a white deer shape but a clan hunt it. After that, when Göktürks need a human for sacrifice, take one person from that clan. This was their punishment.

:A Byzantine delegate has a story about death ceremony of Istami han

:There is a human sacrifice in epic legend of Ural Batyr. Khagan burnt people in ceremony of his birth

I think it is beacuse Central Asians protect the trace of their old religion more then Anatolians like if you go Yakutestan, you can find real shamans. But Turks in Anatolia is for close to Arabs and also we lived close the other Abramic religion which is Christianity so I think that's why people believe much more strong. We are living in religion conflict line, that's why we lost all clear sing of shamanism.

In Greek mythology you can pray Poseidon for much more hunting fish (good side) or not to create stroms (bad side) but not in Turkic myth

If you want to protection you should use black shaman and underworld gods so I can't say any thing about like at. I think in east or west people need all gods

Gigantic Birds

As Phoenix in West or Simung/Angha in Persian myths, Turks have great birds but there is great Persian effect in this case

Tugrul and Konrul: Both birds can reborn and live near the tree of life. Tugrul is the bird of Mongols, Konrul is the bird of Turks. But in Turkey name Tugrul still live instead of Konrul

Tugrul is also Hungarians national symbol

Huma Bird: Persian originate bird but in Turks. It is with goddess Umay

Oskoko: Double head-bird which brings rain and thunder

Merkut: Another great bird which helps shaman to reach the god

Evren/Ejder= Universe

Bukrek and Sangal: Sea Dragons, they fight each other

Yelbeghen: A dragon which eats sun and moon during the eclipses

I said it came form Persian. It is bird in heaven, according to Islamic myhts. They took the pagan Persian figure and used it. Turks did same thing. http://img03.blogcu.com/images/a/k/a/akana/umay_copy_1240673888.jpg

She is winged women so they used the Huma

EMERALD ANGHA
Simurgh also goes by the name of Zumrud (emerald). It was an ancient tale about Malik Mammad, the son of one of the wealthiest kings of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan . That king had a big garden. In the center of this garden is a magical apple tree which yields apples every day. One ugly giant called Div decides to steal all the apples every night. The king sends Malik Mammad and his elder brothers fight the giant. In the middle of this tale Malik Mammad saves Simurgh's babies from a dragon. Simurgh takes pleasure of Malik Mammad and decides to help him. When Malik Mammad wants to pass from The Dark world into the Light world Simurgh asks him to provide 40 half carcasses of meat and 40 wineskin filled with water. When Simurgh puts water on its left wing and meat on its right wing Malik Mammad is able to enter the Light world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simurgh#In_Azerbaijani_folklore - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simurgh#In_Azerbaijani_folklore

This is the only fair tale which I have listent from my grandpa(who was born in Bulgaria). The structure was same; apple, giant, light-dark world, saving baby birds from snakes, 40-meat and 40-water

Is it common in Turkic world? and what about origin Turkic or Persian?

and the name of Emerald??? why. In Turkey, we call it with same name, but it is a phoenix. What is its difference in Central Asia?

If I were Marvel, I would create some combination of these  Big smile

Green-Blue fire symbolizes death                      and Angha is a phoenix(in my culture)

Bird of Death; A phoenix with blue-green fire Big smile

there was very great prince in perisa name isfandyar he was a great and he do a lot of good thing one day as reward of good thing he has done prophet zoroaster took hims to well of eternity he enter the well with out any cloth holy water touch all of his skin after that he could be harm like achilles . isfandyar grow haughty since nothing could stop him the evil slowly grow with in him yet he consider is good hero not evil . in the and he ask from his father to hand over the throne he give 7 impossible task to isfandyar hoping he will fails the 6th i think was to kill the simorgh's babies so isfandyar goes to ghaf mountain in land of deives and kill the babies in simorgh's absents  the last task was to arrest or kill the rostam the another legendery persian hero who was champion of iranian in war against turanians . he was a hero who never defeated so isfandyar goes to baluchestan  where the rostam lives and they agee to fight next morning . next day fight start from morning to night with out stop or rest every time rostam hit isfandyar nothing happens every time isfandyar hit rostam   rostam bleeds at the night rostam for the first time ask for rokhsat ( it's demand of rest and fighting next day its shame for great hero to ask it's greater shame for opposite to refuse ) at the night rostam come back to home he was bleeding from feet to head he he lost a lot of blood . long time ago simorgh give rostam it's feather and told him if he need any help burn the feather in that night rostam burned the feather and simorgh fly to baluchestan and find nearly dead rostam . she quickly heal the rostam than rostam ask how he can defeat the foe which can not be defeated than simorgh answer when isfandyar enter the well he close his eye and water didn't touch his eye he give rostam the two head magical and poisoned arrow next day rostam kill the isfandyar

Ghoghnus, what does it mean? I mean first letters sound like gök=sky. Do you know the origin of this word?

Huma and Umay issue, as you see in the photo, Umay has wings so maybe she can turn into a bird. Also when this bird crows on the head of new born baby. This means luck

Huma come from the Persian also there is an Indian version to which is Kaan Kerede (comes from Garuda). It can eat baby horse

BTW Kırghız people have different bird "Alp Kara Kuş"  which causes storm when it flys

Story of Kaan Kerede and Alp Kara kuş have similar mythic figures like giant bird, snake and baby birds
