Yes its that time of the year once again, when our tv's will be taken over by 24 songs that should never have been created are broadcast accross Europe. Ukraine are the favourites, with a more than annoying, Elton John impersonating, crossdressing, fashion reject - Verda Serduchka!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpJ44NV6m-E - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpJ44NV6m-E

I have to say I'm supporting Romania's Todomondo, with his guitar song about love. As for the British Entry, another year of nil pois, hopefully. If scooch win, we will have to suffer their song on the radio for the next few months, please, no one vote for Britain!

Anyhow, my money is on Ukraine, Bulgaria or Turkey.

Iceland drops out of Eurovision

Iceland’s representative in the Eurovision song contest, Eiríkur Hauksson, did not make it past the semi-finals held in the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland, yesterday with his rock song “Valentine Lost.”

Ten countries from last night’s competition will go on to the finals along with the four largest countries who automatically qualify, the UK, France, Spain and Germany, and the top ten countries from last year’s Eurovision finals.

“Of course I’m disappointed, but I’m not really surprised,” Hauksson told reporters after the results were revealed. “Just look at the results and you’ll see why,” he said, referring to the fact that of the 28 countries competing last night, the ten qualifiers are Eastern European countries.

Hauksson then encouraged Icelanders to vote for their Nordic neighbors, either Sweden or Finland, in tomorrow’s finals. Denmark and Norway didn’t make it to the finals either.

Hauksson told RÚV he would go as far as to say the eastern block “mafia” had “bought” the competition. Iceland has not made it to the finals since 2004.

Newcomers and countries that place below the 14th slot in the final Eurovision song contest have to take part in the semi-finals the following year. The ten favorites make it to the final contest, but the rest has to compete in the semi-finals again.

Viewers across Europe choose their favorite song with televoting, but cannot vote for their own country. Yesterday Belarus, Moldova, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Slovenia, Hungary, Georgia, Latvia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey were chosen to continue in the competition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision - The Eurovision Song Contest has been held annually by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 1956. It is one of the most-watched non-sporting events in the world with millions of viewers both in Europe and abroad.

Iceland first participated in 1986, when Hauksson also represented the country. Iceland’s best results were in 1999, when it placed 2nd with Selma Björnsdóttir’s “All Out of Luck.”

Ulrich, your singer in last eurovision song contest was a grotesc figure. She'd also insulted Greek people in her performance... Hope she is not the characteristic type of icelandic womanTongue

My favourite from last night was Belgium

I agree about the Maltese song, it was quite painful to listen to, and she was upsetting the dogs, which is a pity as we normally rely on Malta along with Ireland for all our votes.

Should be close to nil pois for the British entry

no big surprise, if serbia didnt won ukraine would win with another "masterpiece".

this shows actually that people or voters dont give a f.ck about how the song actually is.

Indeed I had to watch the final as well Cry The sacrifices we do for women...

The only decent song was the German one and to some extend the Latvian.

Serbian was not good, still the singer had an excellent voice...

Damn right, if similar song like Serbian was offered by UK in English language - even then they would get next to 0 points.

Personally I liked Hungarian song in jazz style.

I wanted to vote for Latvia, but my cell was in recharging in the hotel room. Why did Latvia sing in Italian? Singing in Latvia could have been more interesting for the audience;) I watched the contest with at least 100 people in the hobel conference room, everyone was suprised when Latvian got 10 points Ireland, except for me :D

Well IMO it is not a such bad idea to sing in Italian (one of group members was Italian), even better than to sing in crappy English accent, at least no one could understand us (since Italy is not participating though we could get some points from them LOL). Overall I think that this was the best song which we could offer compared with other local contestants.
And yeah Ireland, the only place in Europe where Latvians have sizable population besides Latvia itself.

I would put Slovenia and Germany. I was affraid Bulgaria (as usuall for Bulgarian pop songs) would sound vulgar and it wouldn't. In fact I liked it. Smile
After amaizing performance of Greece, Turkey and Ukraine last few years, I am disappointed by these countries this year.

I actually thought it was better than the Bulgarian Vampire song...or the Armenian one for that matter, I think 4th place was justified.

No points from Grecee and Armenia to Turkey even tough Turkey gave top points for these countries..

So ''hidden nationalism'' in Greece and Armenia is greater than ''hidden nationalism'' in Turkey LOLWinkLOL

Well France gave 12 to Turkey..2nd year in a row, and it is the least popular country in Turkey LOL

I dont know about Greece but in Armenia the nationalism is kind of open LOL

on a serious note, there is almost not nationalism in Armenia...ARF only got 13% of the votes in May 12th elections.

What I couldn't understand is that the organization itself has always been so childish and weird. Other cultural organizations of Europe such as UEFA are super cool but Eurovision Thumbs%20Down. Why? Confused

Why has it been childish and weird? At least  you dont have riots here when your "team" loses...

And who was the one who said the quote above?

If all he needs is Eurovision to respect European civilization, maybe Europe doesnt need his respect at all.

Some say that distinction through education is obtained not only through knowing a lot, but also through knowing what sort of thing you should rather not know so much about. Eurovision would be one of those.

I'm a bit perplexed, it seems that for the duration of these contests many Europeans suddenly lose all sense of taste.

It seems Armenia gets 13.000 votes from Turkey.

Please check the link (Turkish) : http://www.milliyet.com.tr/2007/05/16/guncel/gun09.html - http://www.milliyet.com.tr/2007/05/16/guncel/gun09.html

TRT says they used German Digame system for SMS voting and the results:
Armenia 12 points for 13.333 votes
Bosnia 10 points for 10.884 votes
Russia 7 points for 7.101 votes

Regarding the population (70 mil.), it seems Eurovision voting is not popular in Turkey.

I for one love the song contest. We get some folk round and have a laugh watching it and remembering the ole songs from years past. This world is so serious that this panto of a song festival with Terry Wogan muttering in our ears is a fun highlight of my viewing year!

You shouldn't thank western Europe. No western european voted for Turkey-it was the turkish emigrands that voted.Just like with Serbia.England gave 12 points to Turkey but i doubt any real english voted for Turkey. There are just many turks in England-that's it.It's not a competition for songs but for countries."Who has more emigrands" - that's how they should name it.

9 of 10 songs sucked, as usual. I'd rather have the Turkish song represent Europe, then say, Ukraine :p

Do you really take this crap seriously?

Ofcourse i don't take it seriously. The ukrainian song atleast was funny and made fun of the germans and the russians what we polish really enjoy.LOLAnd not all songs were bad.I liked the Czeh,Slovenian and Hrvatian songs. The bulgarian was also good. Our unfortunately also suc*ed.
