Ares- the God of war was the chief deity of Sparta and this explains their ferocity and militarism.

The major god of Spartans were their ego.
But they had a lot of other enviable characteristics.

Actually, it was Zeus, as with all others.
Although they were an military-oriented society, their deity system was exactly the same as with all other greek tribes, with some minor additions in the lesser-deity domain, sourcing from their local environment.

Zeus did use thunder as a symbol of his power, but he was chiefly the king of the gods. He was not really a symbol of thunder per-say.

Very Good indeed. A little surprise, in today's India or say even many thousand of years ago (snce it has not changed), The Indian king of Gods is Indra who is also the God of thunder & uses the thunderstick as a weapon.

His identity is as the king of gods, but he does use the thunder often, in battlefields.

Vivek that would be beacuse of the much talked about indo-european connection.

as for the spartans, i thought there might of been a laconian bias towards artemis and appollo lykinos (sp?)

Interestingly enough, although today there's not much left of ancient Sparta, but a pile of ruble, the only things that are preserved are a small amphitheatre and a temple of Aphrodite...

Hmm, I always thought that Sparta's chief deity was Athena (no i'm not trying to be ironic )From what I remember their main temple on their acropolis was that of Athena Chalkioikos(Athena of the Brazen house)
Isn't that what makes a "major" god/dess)?

May be both of them.Zeus was master of all greek gods. But definitely spartans considered Ares as their protector.

They probably worshiped most of the major gods in some way, but probably put more emphasis on some.

Thycidides once stated that exact point. That people may be moved to disbelief because of the size of Athens and think it more powerful than once it was, and think the reverse of Sparta.
