Find Lev Gumilev (uncertain about the spelling) - this author is valued as one of the best understanders of the matter; that is if you want to dig deeper into that matter - the battles in the russian stepes are one of the most extensive in the last ten-fourteen (or even more) centuries, starting with Attila, passing through khazars, bulgars, tatars, mongols, cossacks, etc. . Russian authors pay special tribute to these vile riders.

Use babelfish or google to help with translation.  Not perfect but understandable.
