 Why Americans use $ ass dolar symbol? There is no S in dolar. Confused

The piastre was known as "Spanish dollar" in British North America, and in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1785 - 1785 , it was adopted as U.S. currency, together with both the term "dollar" and the $ sign.
