Well, its like the way any other scientific or academic information presented in the media today. It's vetted mostly for palatibility to the public and size of viewing audience, because it's TV. It's not vetted much for accuracy or integrity. Alot of hypothesis that aren't generally accepted - and many that don't stand up well to inquiry - are "pushed" by their proponents these days through various media, and often presented as fact when they haven't even become accepted as theory.
Of course, there's nothing new about this other than the way it's being disseminated. People who believe what they see on television just because it's presented convincingly, without taking upon themselves the job of skeptic and devil's advocate to see what stands up and what doesn't, will always be around and there will always be those of small integrity seeking acceptance for their ideas who will target this credulous and uncritical audience.
TV is not the only media vexing in this way, increasingly other media are being used including the Internet and even video games, which are used to promote threatened stereotypes, debunked history, or even outlandish theories with just as much vigour as old media.
