"Down with Hosni Mubarak!"
This is what Ayman Nur, a politician and staunch rival of
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, shouted as he was sentenced to 5
years in prison for forging papers used to establish his opposition
political party.
Egyptian media insists the charges were baseless and governments around
the world have decried Nur's conviction and harsh sentence.
His wife, Gamila, was temporarily taken into custody after she freaked out once the sentence was read:
She later led protests in Cairo calling for the conviction to be overturned and the sentence revoked.
Free Ayman Nur!
The governments of the United States, Canada, the European Union,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, and Turkey are all putting
diplomatic pressure on Egypt, for whatever its worth.
