The Green Man is most highly believed to have begun as a pre-Christian entity, a spirit of nature personified as a man.  His earliest images have been dated long before the coming of the Christian religion, depictions dating back before the days of the Roman Empire.  However, it is with the coming of the empire that his images are noted as spanning religions, as he has been found both within the empire and at its borders, and then similar versions in other far reaching cultures such as India. Despite the range in locations of artifacts of the Green Man, he is most often associated with the society of the Celts, sequestered particularly in today's Britain and France, because of the high number of images found in these regions and the stylized way in which he has been portrayed.

Green Man (or Green Knight) (or Wild Man) of mediveal Arthurian might possibly be connected with either:
- the serpent Nahash in Genesis. Zaltys is a green serpent in Baltic myth. Green is also the colour of the devil in some medieval traditions, somewhat similar to 'Little Green Men' Martians.
- Pan/Faunus.
- Enkidu/Eabani the "natural man" (or else Humbaba) in Epic of Gilgamesh. Pagans or old.
- Osiris (who was green or vegetation or watery in Egyptian myth, or the "dying and rising god" Osiris/Attis/Adonis/Tammuz/Jesus.)
- El Khadir "the green one"  in Arabian/Moslem legend. Also colour of Islam.
- Merlin (in the wood Broceliande/Caledonis, or Clas Myrddin), or Aneirin.
- the Long Man of Wilmington/Windover?
- Cernunnos or Herne/Herla (the Wild huntsman / Hunter)? (The name Bercilak is maybe similar to the Herle name of the Cerne Abbas Giant?) Or else Mabon (hunter)?
- St Patrick?
- Robin Hood (and/or Guy of Gisbourne), or Morris men. (Especially the Green Man in York cathedral minster chapter house, and possibly in Skelbrook Chapel. 'Lud's Church' has been connected with the Green Chapel.)
- Green George (Gypsy), or George a Green (the Pindar in Robin Hood), or Jack in the Green.
- the Greens or natural/organic/environmenal/ecological/consverationist party/movement.
- Yeti / Big Foot / Sasquatch / Yowie / Moehau?
- The Green Arrow (or Green Lantern) in 'Smallville'. The Incredible Hulk.
- The fourth/last chlorus/pale/green horseman of Apocalypse/Revelation.
- toxic/poison (like toad/frog).
- Or it might just be a world direction (or age) since there is also a Red Knight and a Black Knight (and a White Knight) as well as a Green Knight?

Additionally/alternatively:

Gawain beheading Bercilak the Green Man/Knight is similar to Evelinus beheaded Hirelglas (in the HRB) (glas can mean green/blue/grey/tawny), and/or to Walwan beheaded Quintilianus (in the HRB), and/or Eldol/"Samuel" beheaded Hengist/"Agag" (HRB), Robin Hood beheaded Guy of Gisbourne.

The name Bercilak might be similar to either: Broceliande; "Artus of Bertangaland"; Hirelglas; Creiddylad (Gwyn vs rival); Erceldoune (Thomas Rhymer); or Erl-king?

Green Man's head similar to head of Bran; Bran is also called Gron which might be simlar to "Green"? Green Man is connected with St George who slew Dragon. Green Man might possibly be connected with Uther Pendragon husband of Igraine? Uther Ben/Pen-dragon has been connected with "wonderful head of Bran". Green Man vs Gawain might be similar to Grendel vs Beowulf?

NZ's mandatory fluoridation is not fair because it only forces it on the disadvantaged/some and not on the advantaged/everyone.
