During World War II, the Lockheed developed a long-range version of its famous fighter P-38 Lightning, however, due to technical problems the project was canceled. No need. The existing variants more than met the requirements and necessary capabilities, of the platform' multi role usage, as designed.

And especially as a long-range escort fighter given the use of drop tanks.
