Could horse mounted calvalry have any use in modern warfare.

I don't think so frankly, because close combat rarely occurs in modern warfare. Most infantry would try their best to camouflage and hide from the enemy. In ancient times, cavalry were useful because they were very motile and could deliver a powerful charge that demoralises troops. A cavalry troop would be too visible to the enemy and weaponry nowadays is able to strike fast and from far away. It would be pointless.

As patrols, yes.  It would also depend on the terrain.  I think there are areas in Afghanistan where horses would make alot of sense.  Horses are also quieter than motorcycles and do not need gas.
Super elite South African two man reconnasiance patrols (patrols would spend weeks in guerilla areas) might have used horses as well.

Doubtful.

The lethalty of modern weapons systems and the communications exstant that help control them would preclude it's use in 99% of all situations.

The primary mission of Cavalry (even today) was/is reconnaissance and security of the force. Certainly after the perriod of the late 18th ce. This as it's nature suggests... requires flexibility....mobility and above all speed....over multitudinous terrain and weather conditions. Horses can't do that anymore.

They really couldn't do that in point of fact a 1000 years ago. But they were the best available and hence were the reason they were used. Other tactical combat missions that can be conducted by cavalry can only objectively be analylized with that in mind and how ongoing tech either supported or precluded or substituted their use.

otoh you can eat a horse you cant eat a helicopter or armored or wheeled reconn vehicle.

If we ever return to the days of 1800.. from a tech perspective..then your back in business.

I believe invention of helicopter finally have erased horses role in modern wars! Before this devise was invented only horse could have come in unreachable areas without regular roads!Today they raise them for
parades only and races on hippodromes. Thanks God,wonderful creatures they are!
