Ok I am putting this here because technically it is history and it does pertain to the Near East.

http://www.kathyreichs.com/crossbones.htm

At the moment I am reading this novel and have to say I am engrossed. Its a Crime thriller centered on fiesty Pathologist Temperance Brennan and a case that takes her to the Holy Land. Basically, a a result of the murder of a Jewish antiques collector it calls into question the story of Jesus which is why I'm posting it here.

Here are more links to help you understand the backround to the story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masada
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yigael_Yadin

Masada near Jerusalem is where the action takes place in the Novel. Its the site of a 1st century Jewish revolt against the Romans and mass graves have been found there. Archaeologist Yigael Yadin has carried out extensive excavations of the site

In the Novel however the suggestion is that Yadin may not have been as accurate in is recording of the site as he led people to believe. Temperence Brennan recieves a photo from an informant of a Skeleton from Masade that Yadin never mentioned in the book.

Donovan Joyce wrote a book in the 1960s in which he claimed that an informant ( an archaeologist using a false name) had told him Yadin had found a scroll he believed was written by Jesus himself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Ossuary

This Ossuary was believed to lay credence to the fact that Christ had been at Masada. Many do think its a hoax however.

http://graal.co.uk/ossuary.html

Also found were Ossuaries bearing the names of supposed members of Jesus family.

I won't ruin the book in case anyone reads but Tempe and her collegues Jake Drum and Andrew Ryan certaintly come up with some interesting theories regarding who is buried at Masada and whether Jesus may have lived on into old age.

What do you think? Could Christ have lived on after the Crucifiction and died at revolt in Masada? Were members of his family , brothers, sisters , children buried with him? Any thoughts.

Souds like a Da Vinci Code rip-off to me...

Actually nothing about the Holy Grail save about one sentence where the statment that Jesus was rumoured to have been married came into it. The book also makes the suggestion that Mary was in fact the Mother of those in the tomb. So it also questions the Virgin birth. DVC never really comes into it. I hate when people disregard something just because it seems similer to the DVC without giving it a chance.

I was not so much referring to the Grail or any specific links to the DVC. I was more referring to the kind of pseudo-historical reserch which uses all kinds of unreliable information, half-thruths and a huge amount of not so logical "logical resoning" to prove something which cannot be proven.

I do not care much weather Jesus died on the cross or not, I'm not even sure he ever hung there. From an historical point of view, it does not even matter, because thse story of him has become way more important than the person. But I do care when people think up conspiracies like this just to get attention. Just pop the J-name into a nice juicy story, no-one can ever prove you right or wrong, but historians will be pestered for decades by people beliving it.

Please do not take this as an insult, I do not mean to! Really! Embarrassed If you had fun reading it, than that is a good thing. I just dont like these kind of 'histories'.
