Topic: what would the USA be like if it had split Mexico up into states? Posted: 27-Feb-2006 at 21:19 |
After the United States victory over Mexico during the Mexican American War, it took all of what is today in the South Western part of the United States.
However, in Washington there were politicans who proposed that the United States annex all of Mexico and make it a part of the United States.
So, if the US had dont that, what affect would it have had on the world and history?

We would be more concerned about central American immigration problems instead of Mexican ones.

Wow, I suppose Napoleon III would have had his hands full coming up with another use for that one Austrian prince (or was it a Duke--Maximillian, right?). In addition to this, I doubt the Zimmerman telegram would have been as big of a deal--we can't exactly attack our own border can we?

America would have had a lot more oil. This might have affected its mid
east foreign policy. Also, complete american dominance of Mexico,
and thus the Carribean, would have made life even more uncomfortable
for a communist regime in Cuba. American cusine would be far better.
Mexican Spanish would be a cute cultural relic like the acadian of
Louisiana. 'Race' relations would have been drastically different
(either 'racial' mixing in the USA would have been more generally
accepted, or the Mexican States would have adopted a bit of the
northern USA's slave-trade-inherited racial phobia).
A friend of mine once postulated an even wackier parallel reality: what
if Australia was colonized by seafaring Muslim traders? =)

Perish the thought! You mean Muslim traders in the very cradle of Eastern civilization? *faints*

It would have been very hard for the US to govern Mexico. The part that
was annexed was barely inhabited, but central Mexico was densely
populated, and I don't think the people there would have rejoiced at
being ruled by the US.

The question is what if the USA had conquered Canada in the Revolution or the 1812 war?

The northern states as California, Tejas and Nuevo Mexico had small populations, mostly native tribes. Plus, we did the mistake to encourage US immigration rather than Irish, French and italian immigration.
To rule the entire country from Washington would be very hard to achieve. During the last stages of the war and the militar occupation , the mexican population started to poisson, ambush and murder US soldiers when they had the chance. Some "Notables" in Mexico had the idea to offer to the US the full annhexation of the country. It was not a desirable situation for everybody. The Mexican US War planted the roots of the US Civil war due the inclusion of new states depending on slaves. The Mexican population was tired of the internal struggles, but would not allow to be absorbed by a anglo-protestant country as the US.
Also, I certainly doubt that the european powers such as Spain, France and England could allow to the US to annhex completelly to Mexico due their economical interests.
And in order to stop some comments about the mexican immigration, I would like to point out that the first ILEGAL IMMIGRANTS came northern Rio Grande to Mexico.
People that came to my country without speaking our language and demanding rights. Something that as Historian Scholars we should remember is that History is Dialectic. The flow of events repeats itself.

Answering the general question about how many states would be Mexico spplited ?
The US Confederation planned to expand their territorial extension to Mexico, Cuba and Central America.
Mexico was projected to be splitted in 25 states and Cuba in 3 new states.

MExico can be divided into three areas: the northern deserts, the central heartland and the southern jungles. I could see the US avoid the civil war due to having more land to put in slave states. With dixie being less and less willing to challenge the prevailing world ideas plus the US slwoly outnumbeing the slave states slavery ends in 1888.

Yugoslaviation, USA would be torn upart after the Great Depression. Too many cultures, too many interests. Happened before with the independed states of California 1846-1848, West Florida, Texas and Hawaii 1810-1893.

America is torn apart by race and culture. They want to hope they undergo another depression.

Irrelavent to Americas Illegal immigrants of present.
The first Mexican ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS came from Spanish Galleons. Maybe you should give your land back to the natives because its rightfully theirs??
