What does that have to do with anything...he has been all over Europe, got his education in Poland, Prussia, Italy...you dont sit in one country and make a discovery in a day...

Einstein was Jewish...and he didnt make any discoveries in Israel...

I dont understand what you are trying to argue...

It has to do with everything. My point being Poland was/is/will not (be) an environment propice for intellectual development. In fact, the origin of a person is quite irrelevent, it is the influence of society on that person that truly matters. Which society influenced Copernicus the most for his intellectual enlightenment?  I would say Italy and Germany and certainly not poland. In poland, he simply learned the basics. He had to move overseas for more. Frauenburg although in Poland was actually peopled by Germans in those days.

Einstein was german by the way, of Jewish faith. That's why his name was Einstein not Ben Gurion

no , he was a Jew, and a German citizen (until some time)...then moved to the United States. (if he were a German he wouldnt be harassed)

And what makes you believe that Poland was not a place to get good education. Do you have any factual basis for this? or is it just your opinion? did you meet him in 1500 and ask him if he liked Polish education? (if so did he say Polish education  sucks...?)

According to wikipedia, he encountered astronomy at Jagiellonian University in Krakw, Poland. In Italy he studied Law and Medicine, not astronomy. After completing his studies in Italy he returned to Poland to work for about 30-40 years.

And there was no Germany at that time (there was no Italy either, although I mistakenly mentioned Italy, heh).

Note, that the thread refers to "Great Heroes of other Countries we know", and in this case Copernicus clearly represents Poland....not University of Padua...

Actually soon after Copernicu's death Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania became way more enlighted country than France. When in France even between arictocracy the art of writting was rare and people were murdering one each other in great numbers for religious reasons, in Poland our political philosophers were writting treaties about democracy and religious tollerance (in the 16th century for most of French it were unknown words), large part of population was speaking latin (foreign travellers were even writting that in Poland is more latinists than in Latium), people were saying and printing whatever they wanted without being afraid of death. In 1573 AD catholics and protestants signed act of Confederation of Warsaw (they saw what happend in France during St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre) and even forced newly elected French on Polish throne to sign it (he didnt want to accept it so was simply forced to do it, just like more fanatic catholic bishops who were much less fanatic than this French). So before you start talking about intelectual enviroment in other countries first look into your own which for long was pretty backward.

Einstein is not a German name anyways. Jews in Germany were given German sounding names at some point but you can easily recognise them and those names are not shared with non-Jewish Germans.

Yue Fei- China

General Yue Fei, the national hero of the Southern Song Dynasty, was born in a poor and humble family. But he later became an accomplished general and a man of integrity. In his day, minority nationalities on the northern border, such as the Jins, invaded central China repeatedly. As a valiant and wise commander, he once defeated an enemy said to be 500,000 strong with only 800 soldiers on the outskirts of today's Kaifeng. So a commander of Jin sighed, 'It is easier to shake Mount Tai than to shake Yue Fei's army.' Thanks to Yue Fei and a contemporary general, Han Shizhong, the shaky regime of Southern Song maintained itself for the time being.

Although Yue Fei and other war hawks had won brilliant victories and recovered the most part of the territory, it was the capitulationists like Qin Hui who wielded real power at court. They even resorted to false accusations to eliminate the war party and finally had Yue Fei sent to prison and executed. At the news, General Han Shizhong asked Qin Hui, 'What crime in the world did Yue Fei commit?' To this, Qin Hui replied evasively, 'Mo Xu You' which meant 'something fairly likely.' Later the phrase 'mo xu you' entered Chinese to mean a trumped-up charge or a fabricated charge. Yue Fei was only 39 at the time he was executed.

Yue Fei had been in 126 battles and won them all; this is perhaps the best military record in world history.
