Topic: Was Basil II of Byzantium Evil? Posted: 12-Jul-2007 at 15:32 |
Very well Anton. Would you, to introduce to all us others more deeply the First (or the Second) Bulgarian Empire, mind if you wrote an article for the Magazine about it?

That's a good and challenging task, rider. I will try and do my best. But it should take some time.

That's true. That was Boris/Mihail who actually adopted Christianity as an official religion. The thing is that one can speculate that they (nobles) were not against Christianity but against Orthodox version that was adopted by Boris in contrast to dualistic version like Bogomilism or similar.
Christianity had certainly existed in Bulgarian lands from Roman times, but it was not until much later that the Bulgarian monarchy and nobles could be considered Christian rather than pagan.
|
For most prominent Bulgarian rullers before Boris we can suggest that they were Christians. These include for example Kubrat who was supposed to be baptized in Constantinople or Tervel (with his seals where he asks Virgin Maria to help him).

Simple as that... The one was attacking and the other used cruel methods to scare of the enemy. Basil II might have been a good ruler for his people, loyal to his family etc etc. But good is relative in this case. His actions can percepted as cruel/evil or whatever.

This topic is rediculous. There is no point in assigning modern-day values of morality to historical figures.
Calliing someone "evil" is just name-calling, and no more mature.

Looks like blinding of Bulgarian soldiers for you is proud Byzantine achievement "for the humanity" as Hiroshima bombing is a proud American one

An impressive feat, but still neither good nor evil from a rational point of view--these terms are immaterial and irrelevant, expressing a biased and idealistic Judeo-Christian view of history. Humanity has always done terrible things in war, and always will. I don't see why this shocks you so much, though I can understand you wouldn't like the "Bulgar Slayer". BUt have your own people done nothing in history to match that? No atrocity or large amount of bloodshed whatsoever? If not then be careful, because one must be upcoming.

Alright. I think this thread is all over the place now and has thoroughly runs its course. Judging Basil II by modern standards, as well as trying to prove that ethnic groups from his time act the same today, is anachronistic. This was covered several times already in the thread's previous nine pages.
If you would like to discuss the reign of Basil II, in an object manner concentrating on the history, please do so in this topic:
It is an old topic that deserves to be resurrected.
