QuoteReplyTopic: What if Chin had failed to unify the 7 warring states? Posted: 11-Dec-2005 at 16:07
I have always wondered what would Chinese history be like if the Chin Kingdom had failed to unify the Seven Warring States. Would China have followed the path of Europe and developed into multiple nation-states with different "national" cultures, languages, writing systems, political systems, and even religions, given the fact that even in today's China, huge divergences in culture and language still exist. For instance, the Kingdom of Chu, with its vast territory and distinct culture, could have evolved into a very powerful modern nation-state. The same could also be said about the Kingdom of Qi with its maritime orientation.
The case in China is that it was constantly faced by a myriad of
powerful foreign powers. As a large and powerful state, China was able
to deter or turn back most invasions. Divided into smaller, less
powerful states would allow parts of China to come under foreign rule
more often.
