Does anyone here recall Populous and Dungeon Keeper? Not history related, though much more innovative than any new title we are likely to see today. They were probably the peak of gaming industry, all the titles to follow would aim just at visual effects and the most popular of issues, nobody wants to risk these days.

It is true that nobady want to take risks these days because of the code and money invested in games now. Thus all of the sequals and saturation of themes.

I go for playability over graphics anyday.

Yep some of the sequals even get worse - example FIFA series. There are still good ones such Jade Empire but they are not produced for PCs.

And to think it all started with "Lode Runner" "Digger" "Prehistorik" "Karateka" "Shinobi" "North and South" (the last one I spent the most time on). Kinda lame, but I still play some of these games.

EA is bad. Their F1 racing was nice work and still play sometimes. FIFA? I wouldnt touch it with a 10' pole. Konami is far superior in football/soccer, I highly recommend it if you have not tried it.

When EA takes over, things go downhill, though half of it is just lousy customer support, its like they release it, nuture sales for a few months, and then thats it.

I played populus: the begining a while back, but that wasn't the original. But yeah. the 'classical' games established many genres, that set the scene for future generations of games.
