Pero Vaz de Caminha (
http://isc.temple.edu/evanson/LASC050/Readings/PeroVaz.pdf) describes on a diary form the first journey from Portugal to Brazil and portuguese arrival at the new world. This letter is considered the first document of the Brazilian history as much as its first literary text.
Caminha was a knight and the scrivener that accompanied the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet to India in 1500. The fleet departed from Lisbon on 9 march and on the 22 of april arrived at Brazil. The letter is dated of 1 of May 1500 and was written to inform the King Manuel I of Portugal about the new discover.
The letter is a very important document because it descibes the first european impressions about the land (a tropical and exotic world) and the people - the Tupi/Guarani.
