Franz von Werra was the only Nazi to escape from a British POW camp. Shot down in 1940, he was recaptured twice, once attempting to steal a Hurricane. Transferred to Canada, his third attempt was successful. Werra stole a rowboat, crossed the Hudson river and made it to New York, where he sent a cheeky postcard to his captors
But more important... why.. after surrendering to American police and during the haggling of his extradition between the Canucks and Yankee's was he allowed out of custody and assisted by the German counsel in escaping into Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Italy and back into Germany.
Beats the hell out of me. Allegedly he had a sympathetic American press.
Either way he showed remarkable tenacity and intestinal fortitude
