Topic: Lion, the Middle Persian name of Xerxes? Posted: 06-Dec-2009 at 00:12 |
Old Persian names were not certainly forgotten in the Sassanid period, but they were just simplified, so Ahura-Mazda became Ormazd and Darayavahush (Darius) was chaned to only Dara, but what happened to the name of Xerxes (Xshayarsha)?
It is important to know what this Old Persian name meant, the first part of the word is "Xshaya" (King) which has been simplified to "Shah" but the second part of the word is an interesting word, that is "Arsha", as I mentioned in this thread about King Arthur, in the Avestan and Old Persian languages Arsha could mean "bear", but the actual meaning is a brave animal, Persian "Khu-arsa" (Modern Persian Khers) relates to this word too, so it can be said that Xshayarsha meant a brave "animal" king.
Anyway we know the name of Arta-xerxes was changed to Arda-shir, the founder of Sassanid empire, so it is not difficult to say "Xerxes" is the same Persian word "Shir" which means "Lion".

Of course if we were to accept the Fomenko line of thought, it would be a simple translation to a ruler who carried the "Lion" symbol upon his "coat of Arms!"
Note "Lyon", France is thought by some to be but a version of "Lion!" The period of the 12th - 14th centuries in Greece, is deemed a rule of "Frankish Dukes", etc.
It is also considered that during this period, the invasion and takeover of Greece, was undertaken by various "Frankish" crusaders, who had lived for years in the Levant, and who had undertaken "Eastern" ways, dress, and maybe even language? Since history mentioned the invasions of "Persians" in the past, and since they came from the East, then perhaps these new "Phrankish" invaders were sometimes compared to them? Besides the largest island in France was "Paris!", and residents of this place are today at least called "Parisians!", which is certainly similar to "Persians?"
Par means "equal, or having equal weight to", etc.

And
per" means "through or by means of!" http://ardictionary.com/Per/3704
And "Pers"; http://en.thinkexist.com/dictionary/meaning/pers/
And "Perse"; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Perse
And "per-se'"; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/per+se
The Fomenko Group even compares Xerxes and his invasion of Greece, with that of Walter/Walthier/Gautier de Brienne, and the defense of the pass at Thermoplae by the Spartans with the denfese of the same area by the Catalans under Jean de la Roche! It seems 300 famous knights reportedly died in both events. And, as well it seems that simiar quotations were made by both Xerxes and de Brienne!

One might well want to read about the reknowned de Brienne family? Here is a good site; http://books.google.com/books?id=lhDPAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA146&lpg=PA146&dq=walter+de+brienne&source=bl&ots=iN5noot6BR&sig=gmx5OOp4v3yWDIKIBY2QyXpKL4U&hl=en&ei=83cmS7iIHM6vtgfHscnKBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CBwQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=walter%20de%20brienne&f=false
Pay particular attention to Hugh deBrienne, who, it seems, died vailantly in Sicily along with his 300 "Knights of Death!"

There was no "l" sound in the Old Persian language, so lee could mean nothing in this language.

There were just three vowels in the Old Persian: "a", "i" and "u", so it can be said both "e" and "o" didn't exist in this language.

Cyrus, do you refer to the written language, as in Hebrew & Egyptian in ancient time, or in the spoken tongue too?

Both of them, even in Modern Persian, it can be said that using "e" and "o" vowels just change dialects, for example in Iran in many dialects we see "a" has been changed to "e", so many call Amercia as "Emrika" or Africa as "Efrigha" but in Tajiki it has been changed to "o", so they call their language "Tojiki" or they call the father of the Tajik nation, Ismail Samani as "Ismoil Somoni": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tajikistani_somoni

OPo-oDo-o?!?It is very big difference in original word=sentence cause Apadana says we had same religion once. Before the war i suppose...Sorry about Persepolis but that was an army of mercenaries....I like this version of Apadana:
Human constellations-eternity-skies are/is unified by offered-proposed-rewarded Apadana.
Human constellations-skies-eternity unify/s offered-proposed-rewarded Apadana.
