In light of all the vs. articles I've made I decided that one mother of all vs. articles would be much more efficent and this time you can have multiple combatants in multiple situations at the same time working together or apart, so here it is the fight it can be at any place, time, or terrian, the fighters can have mounts of any kind as long they are horses or elephants but no camels. The point of this topic is to have fun, dispel myths, about the soldiers of the past, find out how good these ancient warriors would have been, and promote knowledge about ancient miltary history, The rules are this:

1 The fight must be without gunpowder weapons
or explosives of any kind

2 No wacky stunts (In other words no matrixy stuff)

3 This is a serious speculative thread so unless you have
a fight or something useful to contribute please don't post here.

4 No magic, lightsabers, Astartes, Master Chiefs etc. AT ALL!

5 You must have a good description of the weather, terrian, equipment, logistics, troops buildings (if there are any)give details (but don't bore the reader) try to make the fight fair and balanced and try to cover the variables, but not so much that people lose interest, and don't have the people killed by something unlikely and stupid

6 No lame unrealistic stuff (in other words don't have a knight killed by a thrown rock, a pulled muscle, a cramp, a falling meteor, or a health condition)

7 All the combatants are in excellent health in the colosseum (unlikey for the time period(s) we're talking about but there you have it) so there for you have to cover morale, mentality, physiology and phsycology.

8 These rules apply to all the fights, NO EXCEPTIONS! If you want to make a rule(s) for your fight contact me

9 You must stick with the fight at hand, you can do your own fight when its your turn and no copycating, also you don't decide the outcome right off the bat let people discuss it first, and you don't decide the outcome let people discuss the fight.

10 Other than that anything goes

Note: You can enter combatants from all era's of history and even fiction for example: rohan vs. the roman empire or a U.S marine vs. a mongol horse archer or vice versa AS LONG AS THE FIGHT FOLLOWS THE RULES!

Welcome to the virtual colosseumSmile I'm your host Count Belisarius btu you can call me Count if you like all my friends doSmile so here is the first fight on the colosseum and it had to be perfect since its on such a wonderful sight with such wonderful people to view itSmile here goes, let the games begin!!SmileClap

The first fight will be a roman legion vs. a medieval army, the fight takes place on clear sunny day with no breeze, in hilly terrain with small dips and valleys, all covered in thick long grass, and a few trees here and there, and a river in the middle of everything with small willows on each bank. The troops are: a usual roman legion of the principate consisting of five thousand five hundred roman legionaries, equipment: lorica segmenata 9which works like a suspension system so that it can repel a direct hit from a ballista, helmet with face masks (all the masks have the eyeholes enlarged to see better), manicae, and greaves, scutum, dagger (pugio) pilum, and gladius. Three thousand auxilarys, equipment: lorica hamata wraparound manicae, greaves, helmet, parma, dagger (pugio) spatha, and hasta. One alae with seven hundred horse archers, equipment: lorica hamata, wraparound manica mail gauntlets (with the exception of the horse archers) greaves, dagger (pugio) helmet with face mask (again with the exception of the archers), parma, spatha, and hasta, note: the alae upon seeing the knights have adopted stirrups and a high cantle and pommel. On thousand archers (sagatarii) with composite bows and broadhead and bodkin arrows, equipment: lorica hamata, greaves, spatha and pugio. five baleric slingers equipment: sling, staff sling, with fire pots that can be fired from the sling or flung from the hand, gladius and pugio.  Three onagers with fire pots, stones and clay fragementation grenades. Three scorpio ballistae with bolts, fire pots, small stones. One polybolos, with bolts (don't know if the romans had those, but they'll be fun to use anywayWinkSmile) four carroballistae with bolts, fire pots, and small stones. The crewman of the engines have bronze lorica squamatas, bronze plumed helmets, wraparound bronze manicae, bronze greaves, bronze mail gauntlets, gladius and dagger. the field medics (caparisarii) are armored like the legionaries only with medical gear and no sheildsSmile they work in teams of two, their gear includes drugs, saws, tweezers, reeds, obsidian scapels, stretchers, and bandages and all their instruments are boiled. The commander, the officers, the singulares (which number five thousand), and the standard bearers are armed and armored like the alae except with muscle cuirasses and plumed helms, the commander has a purple cloak and plume on his helm and sabatons for his feet and a horse with full lamellar barding and his armor and his horse's armor is made of steel he has a lance with a steel head and a bow with steel arrow heads, his singulares (personal mounted guardsmen) have fully barded horses, lances, and bows, All of the roman troops and auxilarys swords, daggers and medical instruments with the excepiton of the scapels are made of a mixture of high carbon steel and low carbon iron all of the troops are highly trained in boxing wreslting and pankration and they are all battle hardened and experienced verterans however the Singulares, legionaries, and the alae are the best trained, most hardened and experinced, and the most disiplined, the roman moral is high but tinged with caution as they have won many battles and they feel nothing but contempt for these uncivilized peasants, but they know not to underestimate their enemy.

The medieval army is composed of a thousand knights, equipment: full plate and chain with sheilds, lances, hand-and-a-half-swords and daggers, their horses have padded cloth caparisons and a chanfron, and seven hundred dismounted knights, equipment: same as the mounted knights. four hundred mounted men at arms with full chain mail armor, helmets, lances, swords, daggers and sheilds. Five hundred men at arms, equipment: same as the mounted men at arms. Seven hundred longbowmen, equipment: longbow with broadhead and bodkin arrows, brigandine cuirass, sword, dagger, and buckler. two hundred crossbow men, equipment: pavise, crossbow with broadhead and bodkin bolts, mail hauberk, helmet, sword and dagger. eight hundred mercenary pikemen, equipment: helmet, chain mail haubergon, twenty foot pike, short sword and dagger. A massive levy of eight thousand peasents, equipment: Varying rutsy farm implements, and whatever the could scavenge for armor. Three catapults with bolts and small stones, two ballistae with bolts and small stones, the crew are equiped in the same amnner as the longbowmen sans the bowsSmile. The scenario: The medieval army under the command of Sir Oliver Hayward acting under the orders of Lord Carisbrooke have advanced behind the roman lines in attempt to attack them from behind and lift the siege of castle douglas however the Romans placed a legion under the command of Legate Gaius Marcellius Antonius in between two hills the only way that the medieval army could reach london in all the other routes would take to long or were occcupied by roman fortresses.
The knights, the mercs, the men arms and the longbowmen are trained in medieval amrtila arts (primaryly wrestling and grappling) but the peasants have no training, and the commander has full plate barding for his horse and a crossbow their morale is high because they believe they will crush the invading scum but they know not to be stupid

Deployment of the Roman army: the romans have set up shop in between two hills each one crowned by large gnarly trees and brambles and undergrowth the romans have postioned a one fourth of the alae on each of the hills along with one fourth of the sagatarii and a third of the legion at the rear of the pass the sides of each hill have been covered with boulders, poisoned lilia and catrops and covered pits with with poisoned spikes, thse are also put at the font and rear of the pass along with large sapling sized stakes that are twelve feet tall to break up the knights and caltrops in the river, the rest of the alae are divided in two wings at the base of each hill, the legionaries, the auxilarys, the sagatarii the slingers and the engines are positioned in the pass twelve ranks of legionaries nine ranks of archers and six ranks of horse archers and the engines at the rear of the romans facing the knights.

The medieval army: The levys are set up at the front to find any traps, take arrows and take down the saplings the mouinted men at arms are
down the saplings, the dismounted men at arms are behind them to keep them going the mounted men at arms are behind them, with the dismounted knights and the mounted knights at the rear, the pike men are at the flanks the crossbow men are behind the pikes with longbowmen are behind the crossbowmen, with the engines at the rear

Miscellaneous: The romans are between five nine and half and six two in height the auxilarys are between five eleven and six four in height their commander is six four and a half

the knights are between five ten and six five the men at arms are around five eight and five eleven the mercs the missle troops and the levys are between five seven and five five eight
their commander is six five

the romans have a camp in the pass and a fresh water supply and and cattleand vegetables and good logistics

The battle: Sir Oliver swore softly, the romans were firmly entrenched, and who new what suprises the grass and the river held, ah well he would have to break them if he was careful he could make it through with enough men to relieve douglas. Legate Antonius waited for the barbarians to come even with all his preparations this would be dicey, ah well he would have to break them, if he was careful he could win this battle

"Send the levy forward, pikes hold, missle troops fire at will." "Engines target the enemy engines" "Charge!" cried Sir Oliver he wondered what it would be like to fight the enemy commander.

"Hold fast," snarled Antonius, "form a testudo, prepare to repel charge and to repel horse and countercharge, missle troops fire at will, engines target the enemy engines and fire, singulares and alae to me! hammer and anvil, horse archers fire at a run! charge, strength and honor! then the battle was joined, he braced himself in his new stirrups and wondered what it would be like to fight the enemy commander

Okay guys there are the missle troops trading shots and shooting at the enemy there are the engines firing at each other there legionaries and auxilarys fighting levys, enemy cavalry, in formation and in mass melee and one on one and the commanders are fighting each other, and the roman legates bodygaurds are fighting the english commanders brother knights who do you think would win?Smile

Merlin, sat on a sturdy branch that could carry the weight of Sherwood's finest. He is 8 foot nine with a long grey beard and wears a cloak made out of tempered spider silk. He observes the battle while eyeing the young and wounded. He wastes no time as the Roman legions and Medieval armies were too busy showing off thus brandishing their arms to have noticed; Merlin made off with the young Arturius and staked a claim for the future of Britain. There are too many variables for these kinds of threads, as I tried to explain to you earlier.
What is the officer problem?

I think that the romans would win since their employing the formation they used to beat cataphracts which were much heavier than the thirteenth century knight however they would take lots of casualties as the cataphracts didn't have stirupps, and the alae would be hard pressed even with their new stirupps, the singulares would fare better because of their barding. The engines would be so busy with each other that they couldn't shoot at the enemy troops, the missle troops, poisoned caltrops and stake pits and lilia and infantry would shred the levys, the infantry would have a harder time with the dismounted knights and men at arms but they would eventually triumph, the missle troops would have a hard time matching the long bow and crossbow men however their arrows couldn't get through the testudo and they were taken by suprise from the roman countercharge, lets see hwo the commanders are doing Sir Oliver stepped and stared at the enemy commander and the dead bodys of his brother knights thta the roman had easily cut down the rest of were busy fighting waht was left of the enemy commanders body guards, he circled the roman carefully this time as he knew that the roman fought like a demon. Legate Gaius stepped away from the knight over the body of one his singulares, his best men and the knight had cut them down like grass, what was left of them were fighting the remains of the enemy commanders brother knights, knights that he had easily killed without breaking a sweat, and they were the enemy commanders best men, he charged the knight again but with more caution this time, for the enemy commander fought like a demon okay so who do you think would win? there are also a bunch of other fights going on, who do you think will win in those?Smile

I'll discuss! What Medevial peripod are we talking about?I assume you just mean your basic Knights?Ill be the Knights then!Your army is marching through the wods after a great victory. Its dark. You here a brush of leaves and some men talking in old English. There comes ou of the forest the army of King William the Conquerer! You are takin by suprise.your Horses are afraid and run off.So there you are.A few of your best men and your best non-scardey cat horses. You fight well. But Williams army does a Duke Harold on your genral and shoots you in the eye with a arrow.I cand deal with this you think while the arrow comes(you think really fast). But NO!Its not the arrows King Williams army wouldm use.Its a crossBow.Your eye splatters on the ground and you fall off your horse.Your men that are still living (and thats miraculus anough) lose are there last courage and flee to Rome.

Now who do you think would win the fight?. By the way William the conquerer had been dead for years so no this isn't the same war and we are doing the fight at hand not some other battle. I would suggest you read the colosseum rules and try to spell correctly
