There is no proper term for citizens of Afghanistan. Afghan means Pashtun, it is synonomous with it. Locally, when you want to say a "citizen of Afghanistan" you say "Afghani" or "Aghanistani".
Also many Pashtuns esp in rural areas tend to define themselves in terms of their tribe. So say, Afridi, or Yousafzai, or Khattak. This is esp true in Pakistan.

We used to call Afghanistan Citizens as Afghani, too.
Actually it is. Non Pashtun Afghanis get very hot under the collar when you call them Afghan. Afghanistan's name is what they want to change, since they are not Khorsan.
