On 11 May 2008 there will be parliamentary elections for the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. These will by far be the most crucial ones for the country and the region since November of 2000. They will be held at the same time as the scheduled local elections and are a direct result to the current government's collapse over the crises caused by Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence. The primary division is onto European and Patriotic Blocs.

1. For a European Serbia - Boris Tadic

A pro-EU coalition headed by the Republic's charismatic Preisdent of his Democratic Party, the G17 Plus (including members and fractions of the Serbian List for Kosovo-Metohija and the Kragujevac-based Serbian Democratic Renewal Movement), the Sanjak Democratic Party, the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina and the Serbian Renewal Movement. They stress that European integrations of the country are conditionless and must be pertained at all costs possible; that the EU means new working places for 200,000 unemployed, new investments and that India, Russia or China cannot replace the European Community, to which the Serbian nation belongs. They claim the recent Stabilization and Association Process is their greatest victory, stand for respect of Vojvodina's autonomy, promotion of national minorities and European integrations of the whole region, and funding scholarships for students abroad. Return to the 1990s which the other side offers will only bring further conflict with historical friends and the entire world.

The EUropeists exclude all cooperation with the SRS, opening to any who accept the European perspectives of Serbia. This primarily means LDP; they hope for support of the national minorities and would a bit dislike a coalition with DSS or SPS.

2. Liberal Democratic Party - Cedomir Jovanovic

This ultra-liberal political party proposed its President as a candidate for Prime Minister. They have attracted a number of non-political persons, and also include on their list the Social Democratic Union and the Christian Democratic Party of Serbia. They are not religious, stand for making a historical compromise with the Kosovo Albanians, tolerance of people of different ethnic or sexual preferences. They only and solely see the Europeists and the national minorities as a potential cooperation, discarding the others without opinion. They support the European perspective of Serbia. Their motto is Serbia with No Borders - Spread Onwards!

3. Democratic Party of Serbia - New Serbia - Vojislav Kostunica

A coalition of two populist political parties that suddenly became nationalist, led by the Prime Minister in resignation that keeps losing in popularity. Their stand is that the European coalition are traitors and, though they support the SAA, they will abolish it in the next government. Cooperation with the Europeists highly unlikely due to the fact that they dislike LSV considering it separatist, dislike the reformist G17+ and also hate the Europeist's leader for European integrations Bozidar Djelic. They exclude the possibility of cooperation with the LDP completely. They stand for economic reform of Serbia and pertaining Kosovo within its borders. Their motto is Support Serbia!

4. Serbian Radical Party - Dr Vojislav Seselj

Ultra-nationalist political party led by a charged war criminal at the ICTY. Leader of the other bloc, known as "Patriotic". Stands for immediate abolition of the SAA treaty, trial of Boris Tadic for treason, socialization of the capitalizing Serbian society and as closer ties to the Russian Federation as possible. They oppose the European integrations of Serbia. They are destined form a future government together with DSS, to which they offered a choice: either a majority in the government, or the seat of Prime Minister. Their motto is Forward Serbia!

Website:http://www.srs.org.yu/

5. Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), - Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) - United Serbia (JS)

A coalition of social political parties gathered around their presidential candidate Milutin Mrkonjic. Would favor a coalition with DSS-NS as a priority, but fears the Radicals. The local Jagodina-based United Serbia is the most fearsome critic of straining relations to countries that recognized independence of Kosovo. They are dedicated to solving the problems of the poor, the unemployed and the retired. Their motto is Rise up, Serbia! They will most likely be the key to the formation of the future government.

I wonder if Tadic's support will vanish after the last events.

The whole country has split into two factions. One is called "Europe has Got No Alternative" and the other "A Million Messages - Kosovo is Serbia".

The division is similar to the one in Montenegro before the referendum. There is occasional violence between the groups (mostly the latter attacks the first).

Well, Tadic's popularity has immensely grown. But so did the popularity of his political opponents. Serbia is crystalizing as a two-party system - the Radicals and the Democrats.

Whole of Belgrade is full of posters calling for his and Deputy Prime Minister's assassination. He has also received a letter of death threatening from the illfamous Society of Chicago Serbs. The Society of Chicago Serbs has threatened a wide array of Serbian intellectuals and leaders and is believed to be an important link in the chain of protection of Ratko
Mladic.

whos' suprised with this type of outcome? For sure major parts of the population would be pushed back into the more radical politics after the way the big powers handled Kosovo. They should of waited at least until serbia was intergrated into the EU and then gradually let it loose when it was mentally prepared for such a loss.

As much as it sounds odd - this one is true - the West and Europe have by far more hampered the pro-European forces and even helped the revisionists. Sometimes, it seems as if it's completely intentionally doing that. Some state that the support for Kosovo independence was just a political event in an attempt to bring the radicals to power.

The "My Serbia" movement's slogan is "Neither Europe! Nor Russia"!

Well Kostunica could be that, but he has become far too pro-Russian.

(unrelated) Kostunica has today received unreserved support from the Neo-Nazis of Serbia.

An unmatched historic victory of the pro-European bloc, though questions still remain regarding will they be able to form government.

Serbs have voted for close ties with Europe in parliamentary elections seen by many as crucial to the country's future.

With 85 per cent of the votes counted nationwide, the prominent election monitoring agency CeSID said that President Boris Tadic's pro-European block won 39 per cent of votes, leaving the ultranationalists in the Serbian Radical Party well behind with 29 per cent.

The conservative block of outgoing Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica stood at just 11 per cent of votes.

The results surprised most analysts, as opinion polls prior to the elections showed anti-European parties taking a strong lead.

"The electorate of Serbia has clearly turned towards Europe," said Zoran Lucic, the head of CeSID. "Tadic's block has convincingly won these elections." The turnout was 60 per cent of the 6.7 million voters.

The next job for Mr Tadic and his pro-European forces is to form a new coalition government, most likely made up of members of his block, the small pro-Western Liberal Democratic Party and smaller minority parties.

"Serbian voters have confirmed the clear European path for Serbia," Mr Tadic said. "Serbs want to go down the road to European Union and Serbia will be in the EU."

Mr Tadic's insistence that Serbia sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU last week became a major target of ultranationalist in a smearing electoral campaign, as he was accused of trading "Kosovo for EU membership".

The southern province of Kosovo declared independence in February. Serbs consider it to be the cradle of their medieval state, although it is now ethnically dominated by Albanians. The recognition of Kosovo's independence by many EU countries and the US fuelled anti-Western feelings among many Serbs.

There remains a theoretical yet slim chance that Mr Kostunica, the Radicals and the Socialist Party of the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic could try to form a government. The Socialists made gains yesterday, winning about 8 per cent of votes, and could play a crucial role in such an effort.

Analysts say that the unexpected setback for nationalists has come as a result of the changes Serbia saw after Milosevic fell from power in 2000. Most Serbs are desperate for improved lifestyles. Family prosperity and security top the list of priorities as Serbia's economy has recovered since 2000.

The EU welcomed the projected victory of the pro-European forces in the election and said it meant Serbia would move faster towards the EU membership.

"The pro-European side in Serbia won, which was what we were aiming for in the EU," said Dimitrij Rupel, the Foreign Minister of Slovenia, which currently holds the EU's rotating presidency. Like Serbia, Slovenia used to be part of Yugoslavia.

"This means that Serbia will move forward ever faster to membership of the EU, and that the terrible episode of the Yugoslav war in the 1990s is forgotten; that people in southeastern Europe will be able to live together without prejudice," Mr Rupel said.

Yes, but on the other hand I'm surprised, considering how bad EU has treated them.

Three moments were crucial:

1. Signing the SAA with the EU, the Patriotic forces made promises to abolish it, eventually committing self-suicide

2. A gigantic investment of the Italian FIAT in Serbia

3. Free (of charge) visas for 18 categories of Serbian citizens

If these didn't occur, I don't think the results would've been this way. In any case, a lot of people were talking bad about Serbia since the ultra-nationalists are always the strongest for years in elections and how they're leading everywhere - well, the List for Europe is leading in over 80% municipalities and cities, as well in Vojvodina province and in the Republic. Clap

In essence, I think that many people fail to see the historical breakthrough of this election and its essential meaning - especially when we compare it to the previous elections.
