Topic: Greatest Sports Rivalries Posted: 15-Dec-2007 at 15:00 |
Hello to you all
I was wondering what are your country's greatest sports rivalries whether it is on the national level or the international one.

The Ashes, the annual cricket contest between Australia and England.
This event is easily the most important, owing to the huge history
behind it.

The USA is full of sports rivalries:
NBA:
Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers used to be the biggest rivalry, but is has waned in the last 15 years or so.
Baseball: Boston Red Sox/ New York Yankees LA Dodgers / San Francisco Giants
NFL: New England Patriots / Indianapolis Colts Green Bay Packers / Minnesota Vikings
College Sports:
Duke University / University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Spain: FC Barcelona vs. Real Madrid
Those are the big ones I can think of right now...

The present football leagues with their capitalistic motivations and the old fashioned football supporter, who pais his money to get the feeling of a long forgotten era.
Football and tradition....
football and worker sweat...
that are rivals, and the commerce is the winner yet.

Country is debatable, but for state (minnesota) it is definitely Vikings and Packers. (american football) Especially, the border with Wisconsin only half an hour/45 minutes from Minneapolis, since there are a ton of traitors who are packer fans here. That is the only major one that comes to mind for state rivalries.

But there is a rivalry between German and Holland. Yes, there is.

Nowadays, Saudi Arabia vs Iran, poor Iranians haven't won a game in years and we kicked them from two world cup qualifiers as well as two Asian chapionship finals .
In Azadi stadium, they allow 120 000 people to sit on top of each other so that they could see the game, the stadium can only carry 90 000 only to be dissapointed by yet another loss from the the green Falcons .
Back home, Al-Hilal, the master of asian clubs regrettablly, and Al-Nasr is the most competative game though it has been played down in recent years because Al-Hilal is in its best years after winning 6 asian titles in 8 years while we only won two and lost two .

Great rivalries need opponents who regularly despise the other. Some are old standouts who left their worst behind. Some are just itchin for a fight but could be rather cordial in best of times and some are
getting accustomed to all out war.
Old Glory
Ali - Frazier
Celtics - Lakers
Steelers - Raiders
Montreal Canadiens - everyone else
Notre Dame - anyone else
Yankees and everyone else
In Hibernation
Red Wings - Avalanche
New dipsutees
Colts - Patriots
Spurs - Mavericks
Hillary - Obama
Traditional Titans still hungry for blood
Auburn - Alabama
Michigan - Ohio State
Yankees - Red Sox
Betman - NHLPA

Montreal Canadiens - everyone else |
I don't know the History between the two, but when the Canadiens and Bruins play, I always see comments. I guess it could be the Original 6 thing, but I don't see that with Toronto.
To bad the Quebec Nordiques are gone, could still have the battle of Quebec. Now we have the Battle of Albetera, Edmonton Oilers vs Calgary Flames.

The Bears vs Packers rivalry is much more intense than the Vikings - Packers one.

Go Devils (I'm a Jersey boy what can I say)!
For me at least the big rivalries goes as such:
Yankees/Red Sox
New York Jets/Patriots
Devils/NY Rangers
Those are the big ones for me. Go Yankees, Jets, and Devils.
