I would be delighted to receive ANY information on, or reference to, the continuing use of the bton as the insignia of a military commander in Europe in the Merovingian/Carolingian period.

Was it used before? I though the baton was a Modern (XVItg cent. onwards) simplification of the mace...

no, the batton goes back to the Romans, and eventually i believe to the Assyrians. the mace as commanders insignia exist only in Steppe empires and Poland. i've also seen it used by Swedish and Assyrian officers.
