Okay, so I have been playing hearts of iron I for around a year now.  One thing I had to do was the editing of leaders and tech trees to make the game run more realistically.  Anyone here ever tried to play as the germans in the 44' scenario?  Talk about no chance.  Over 500 Soviet divisions just on the eastern front to try and stop, who are equal in technology, plus around 50 allied divisions in the province of cherbourg and at least 20 more in Italy.  Then there is that damned rubber.  It seems impossible to keep the economy up and running which makes me less inclined to even build panzer division because of the economic effect.  Usually what I do is build those without deploying them until I am committed to an invasion and then deploy them, wait for their organization to max and then attack.

My question is how does HoI I compare to HoI II?  I have not played the second edition and am considering buying it.  Are the leaders for each country changed statistically speaking or the same?  How about the tech trees?  Can you actually stand a chance as the germans fighting the soviets on the normal difficulty setting?  (It is usually a struggle to push to the Leningrad/Moscow/Don line without massive soviet counter-attacks collapsing my infantry forces.  I usually group all my armor and mechanized forces for offensive operations trying to encircle and destroy soviet divisions)

Also I am wondering whether HoI II is more bug proof than HoI I.  An example:   I will send all of my navy, air force and army as expeditionary forces to austria so I will not have to waste 70 IC on supplying my armed forces.  After the Anchluss I will notice all the leaders in charge of those forces have been deleted from the game.  I will literally have to go into the saved file and manually put those leaders back into that file.  Anyone else ever encounter this sort of thing?  Obviously I no longer put any leaders in charge of any formations that I give to austria until the anchluss, but that glitch is still there, I'm just ignoring it.

Do you mean the transport capacity?
I conquered the world with Germany till 1951.
It is funny to play against human player, but the computer enemy is too stupid. The Brits had the RN in Malta and I could bomb all the battleships with my STUKA.
In HOI II there are companies, like: Porsche, Krupp and Messerschmid for Germany, Boing, Springfield....for USA

The 70 IC part was industrial capacity.  From what I understand that would be the same thing as transport capacity in HoI II, so yes, that is technically what I mean.  I have read about this transport capacity feature in HoI II, if you have played that and HoI I, I'm curious what your thoughts are on it.

Companies you say?  Now that sounds intriguing...

What setting was that german campaign on?  You were able to conquer the entire world in a 15 year span?  Now that is most impressive.

I've only played the first one, I usually play the Germans, but whenever I play the Americans, I go to reorganize the Navy, the game crashes.

Playing the Germans is great, I start in 1936 and I conquered Siam for Rubber, so when I go to war with UK I take over Singapore. and I just add tons of escort Destroyers to the convoy.

I really dont play HOI anymore, I play Med2TW, but can anyone tell me where to get HOI 2?

No in 12 years by Difficulty stage normal I started with Poland, Hungary and Yugoslavia in1939. After Norway and France in 1940 I attacked the RN with many tactical bombers and put 24 divisions on Dover.
In 1941 I took West-Russia and in 1942 Italy, Vichy, India and the Middle East.
In 1943 I conquered Sibiria and then I began to build a fleet and many torpedo-bomber. I cleaned the north Atlantic and but 240 German Divisions on Newfoundland in 1945. I used the IJN as cannon fodder.
In 1948 I had north and South Amerka. In 1949 Afrika and Australia. In 1950 I banned Japan and the japanese puppet China and attacked it.

My compliments, you guys seem to be pretty good.  Would you guys follow realistic outcomes often or completely go fantasty; like declaring war in 36' versus allowing the events to fire - anchluss, Molotov agreement etc.

it is pretty normal that a game with a superpower doesn't last longer than '47 or so, depends on what your goals are. if playign germany, you only need to invade britain (which is rather easy) and to defeat the reds, which is also rather easy for experienced players. once you are beyodn that point, the only serious ressistance left is the US but by now you have enough IC to outproduce them and the game gets really boring.

Sun Tzu - have you tried amazon.com?  I got hearts of iron I and Crusader Kings in a package for like 10 dollars.

Oh...haven't touched HOI2 for about a year now...

EU3 I've bought when it first cam out and only played it for a week or two. The only thing in the collectors edition I use on a regular basis is the oversized shirt it came with.

I hear with the lasted patch on HOI2 you can play up till the '60's. With Vietnam War and such it should be pretty interesting...but too busy conquering everyone as the Mongols in MTWII Kingdoms SS mod to give a crap about anything....lol

actually you can only play to the year '64, that doesn't mean that all the events and personalities were included as well. Unhappy they only included the countries, but without minsiters, eladers etc it is pretty flavourless and pointless. also, i find the Chiense theatre unbearable. in one of the patches they turned Chian into a secodn himalayas, they turned almost every terrain, in aprticular in the south into hill or moutnian terrain to slow down the Japanse AI advance. to coutner that, human players resort to unrealistic gameplay, that is buildign loads of moutaineers and cavalry, soemthign the Japanese almost didn't had at all. also China itself is pretty unrealistic, but thats mostly due to the game physics. the problem is, China has too few divisions and too much IC, basically. the problem is, China should be able to produce innumerous infantry divisions etc, but no native hardware, like tanks, ships & planes. this is a game aspect that is still the major flaw of an otherwise great game unsurpassed in detail and accuracy.

Yeah I think the only reason why it sustained me for so long was because I've refrained from playing as China. I'd even played as the Japanese once, which was pretty fun, but i've never once touched China.

Yeah it would be pretty crappy if you can play till '64, but without events like the Korean war, Cuban missile crisis and Indo-china and such.

'64!!!
I have only the basic version (free from a magazine), where you can play until 31 december 1947!
Is this '64 version a patch, or infact an expansion (for which one will have to pay)?

there are two expansions to HoI2, the first one is called Armageddon where you can continue play until Stalins death ('53). the second one is called Armaggedon which lets you play until '64.

Armageddon's like a huge patch rather than an expansion. You have to pay like $5.99 or something like that...just for the heck of it.
