Historians have suggested the full force of Greeks may have been as high as 8000 to begin with or that the 1500 only stayed put on the third day after being trapped by the Immortals. The Spartans may have only sent 300, not because of the Olympics or Carneia, but because they didnt wish to defend so far north, although it does seem unusual they would have sent a King if so.I think the true spartans may of been 400 or so but this is also plausabel. You also have to take in count that they even state int he myth ''we embarked with as many as 4,000 of our greek brothers against the demons(Persians).''

Dear Deano, you are new in this forum, so before posting, you better needed to search related topics of that. We have already hardly debated on it and learned a lot, so if u just go to the archive I am sure u can easily find pretty enough information on that.

Thanks

There were about 7,500 Greeks and about 25,000 to 30,000 Persians present at the battle of Thermopylae

What is the officer problem?

The Spartans went because of their alliance but didn't retreat along with the bulk of the Athenian and other Greeks forces is because it was against their law. But other than the 300 Spartans which included King Leonidas (mind you the Spartan king was alot different to what other nations considered there kings) there was also others who stayed where the Spartans were and also up defending the pass in the mountains that the Persians eventually got wind of.
