The future force warrior is a DARPA (defense advanced research projects agency) project to make individual soldiers far more effective and protected in the near future. the details can be found in several places, but one of the best is here

http://science.howstuffworks.com/ffw.htm

What's your opinion? is this the future of war, or just an attempt to solve problems with shiny gadgets? What might possible enemies of a soldier suited up like this do to adapt? Will the project start a sort of arms-race, causing other countries to attempt to create their own "super-soldiers"?

..Will this lead to every soldier being like Master Chief From HALO? Wink

opinions! jokes! thoughts! comments! suggestions! eccentric dissertations on spoons! I want to hear them all! (the last because I just like spoons)

thank you in advance for sticking your thoughts on a data-stream and sending them to this topic.

Head Notes:

It wasn't a hyperlink so didn't spend time surfing around it.

Don't know what the term "spoon" means other than: soup, tea, plastic and that metal thing you hold down until throwing a grenade.
=================================================
Many of the scientists, engineers and managers at DARPA, working with individual soldier issues, have never left the sheltered suburbs their entire time on planet Earth.  They keep busy for personal career advancement.

A current DARPA "gadget" in the works is the "space suit", a soldier's field uniform that protects against enemy scrapnel and bullets. It has sensors built into the uniform to relay the wearer's vital signs back to the medical corps unit for monitoring.

Meanwhile, the Army's socks went from 99+% wool to 50% wool/50% cotton.  Look how much nylon is in a field uniform: about 50%.  Aforesaid is for cost savings. In case of a fire: geometric problems for the soldier and not the DARPA engineers.

The real efforts "to make individual soldiers more effective" can be found at the newly created Defense Department's Special Operations Command.  The day care centers and JAG officers are being phased out with commandos returning to the ranks.

It takes time measured in decades to rehabilitate a military establishment.

I see. And the word "spoon" was indeed used to refer to the metallic utensil used for various soups and semi-liquid foods.

That was something I thought-gadgets really don't win wars, and the only way to truly increase the level of effectiveness of an army would be to develop more efficient, effective, and lasting tactics, strategies, and methods of training. Making new shiny toys is sort of the easy way out.

..That said, it does HELP to have a more advanced piece of technology, just not as much as being innovative, adaptable, and skillful does.

There is underlying truth behind all human warfare: one group of fellows are trying to kill a group of the others with whatever means that are available to them. This same truth applies to the other side as well. And there is another truth: humans beings would not still be here if they were not adaptable. Whatever DARPA thinks will make the perfect soldier won't: his enemies will adapt, at whatever expanse, and will always find ways to kill him. One can imagine Caesar imagining the end of military technology when he Rome aquired Nordicii steel in the 100's AD... no status quo can be maintained. Whatever research the US develops, at whatever cost, the quest for the perfect soldier is like the quest for the grail... alluring but ultimately impossible.
