My family's oral history states my great grandfather always said he was East Indian. When his family came to America in the early 1800's their surname sounded like Whims, Weems, Wims or Williams. Is there an East Indian name that sounds like one of the names listed?
Thank you in advance for your time and reply.

my surname is Bendi But i don't know origin of my surname i am from Andhra pradesh. I would like to know the history of my surname Anyone know best way to search this subject: The name Bendi Patmahara keeps coming to my mind, strangely, I do not know why at this juncture. I assume it is a name, not a title or an object or place. I know it's strange, that's why I'm posting. Thanks [/QUOTE]

There is another name similar to Kassie ie "Kasi". IKasi is a Sacred city for Hindus, presently it is called "Banares".

I dont think that there is a such a surname in East India.
"Ghazi" means soldier of Islam.Earlier muslim rulers of India used to kill hindus(infidels) personally to achieve the title Ghazi or Khazi. Akbar the mughal emperor is known to have killed Hemu to earn the Ghazi title.

Duke, I think that you are now treading water! Really smart remarks like that will not get you anywhere here!
While I do not have any powers here, sometimes others also read these postings!
So, consider this as a non administrative warning! please?

Kumkuma or Sindhoora is not exactly Bindi. Sindhoora is worn by married ladies in their "Seemantha Rekha forhead(in the centre just below hair)

Is it cultural or religous? I am pretty sure that I have seen Indian Christian women wearing it as well. |
Earlier they never used to do that. &Now also only some sects of christians are doing so

Wikipedia says;

A bindi can be called:
Kunkoo or Tikli in Marathi
Pottu in Malayalam and Tamil
Tilak in Hindi
Kunkuma in Kannada
Tilo in Konkani
Chandlo in Gujarati

Nande is a term erroneously used to describe a bindi in Malaysia. It may contain pejorative connotations although not in most cases."

All surnames have meanings Trivedi - means those who have knowledge of three vedas. Dwivedi is one who has knowledge of 2 vedas. Chatur vedi one who has command over 4 vedas Thripathi who teaches three vedas Vajpeyi is one who conducts vajapeya (a vedic ritual). Singh,Sinha,Singhania all had originated from sanskrit 'Simha' meaning lion. All others are having meanings but I am afraid I'll not be able to explain all. I have posted the details of Agnichayana in apost which has mention about vajapeya.

I would assume that all of the above names have some meaning, if so, just what are the meanings?
With meanings, one might conjecture just how these names might have been translated into other languages!
For example, Dutch/Dutche=German=Alleman, etc.!
