Today, 70 years ago the German Zeppelin " Hindenburg" was destroyed by a fire while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which was widely reported by film, photographic, and radio media.

Zeppelin - an innovation that was very promissing at that time, named ater the constructer Fredinand von Zeppelin.

Airships were already used in WWI for reece.

But after this catastrophy this kind of means of conveyance has an irrelavant meaning til today.

Well, the fool wasn't able to get hold of Helium at the time, due to international circumstances.

My grandparents took my mom and her sisters to Lakehurst to watch the Hindenburg land.  They were late but because the ship was delayed they were arriving just as the ship caught fire.  Mom was eleven, she said she had nightmares for years because of it.
Lakehurst is about 40 miles north and east of me, it's pretty much been left as it was on that day.  The airship hangers are still there.  Out where the Hindenburg went down is an outline in white stone and a memorial.

This is the memorial erected on the spot where the Hindenburg went down.  There are services held there every year on this date.
