Topic: China booming,Hong Kong dying Posted: 06-Sep-2006 at 18:33 |
Before 1997, many people in Hong Kong feared that communist would kill the capitalism of Hong kong. Now almost ten years of takeover, changes really taking place, Hong Kong people become poor. But the real problem is not the killing of capitalism of Hong Kong, but the introducing of Capitalism to China. Hong Kong businessmen moved the money and investment back to China, because of lower labour cost, so Hong Kong is losting money and investment. The stock markey still good, or better, because of the listing of China enterprise, but overall, Hong Kong becomes poor. Now some Hong Kong people want the Communist. One of my friend,an owner of a small shop, say that Communism should be introduced. then he can no longer worry about the rent and the profit.
Very crazy. Can we find similiar example in world city.A city died because other parts of the country grew.

This thread has been moved from "AE Tavern" to "General World History" not just because it definitely does not belong to the Tavern, but also because of the interesting question raised in the post: Are there examples of the "death" of a city due to the growth of other parts of the country?

I think in saying that while China is getting rich, Hong Kong is getting poor, one is making the assumption that China is becoming rich at the expense of Hong Kong. I think that assumption is problematic as you are assuming that becoming rich is a "zero-sum" game. Maybe both Hong Kong and China are benefiting from one another instead of the latter harming the former.
Moreover, Hong Kong's role as the financial centre of Asia is still as solid as ever. What one is witnessing in Hong Kong is not necessarily the death of the city, but the change in the function of the city from being a manufacturing hub to a centre that provides services, capital, and know-how especially to China. Such transformation has been taking place for quite a while already and it is not an indication of the decline of Hong Kong, but is a sign of the maturation of its economy.
Also, to say that Hong Kong is "dying" is a little bit of a stretch - (1) it remains to be one of the wealthiest cities not only in Asia but also in the world and (2) its economy has shown some remarkable recovery in the past few years after the worst economic depression in its history.
But it is still interesting to see if there are examples of the death of a city due to the growth of other parts of the country where it belongs.

Of course, Hong Kong provide fincial service and capital to China, but H.k has six million people, not everyone can join this party, as a city, Hong kong is not dying, but I say dying,it is because I based on the living of the people.

It is very common one edge of a country becoming poor when other parts of the country are geting rich. The hong kong now is not the center of china or the region. As Chine becoming more advanced many other cities are want to become economy centers. The fact is that Hong Kong has a little competition. I don.t believe that ever Hk will become worthless as a economy capital. It is just have less investmens coming there because of the growing of many cities in the region.
After all it is a fact that everything has the Peak and the fall

But the problem is that, of course, Hong Kong is part of China, but H.k had been the British colony for almost one and a half a century, many thing in Hong Kong are quite different with China, as well as Macau, if Hong Kong people go back to work in China, even Macau, they are treated like foreign labour! Hong kong people need to "apply" for the citizenship of China, and even Macau, Macau ask you to buy a house at least 150 million, and must have saving at least of 500000. So what is the future of Hong Kong people. They are not easy to move.
