Aeolus - thanks for the links  - I love the National Archaeological Museum in Athens  and the Acropolis Museum  (haven't been there in over 6 years   ) (and the Delos museum, and the Delphi museum...  )

akyncy - no I don't really - I'm too poor  - if I ever had any real money I would collect, but I am opposed to collectors who buy up for personal collections unique items that should be on display in museums for all to see as part of our world heritage. I really enjoyed the museums in Istanbul also.  Topkapi isn't really antiquities - but the Archaeological museum attached is a hidden gem - their collection of statuary and relief carving is spectacular.   I'll have to spend some time and see if they have an online collection to add here.  Do you have links to any of the Istanbul Museums?  Or other Turkish museums with good online collections?

Another collection that has a good online display - the McClung Museum - here's a link to their Egyptian collection:  http://mcclungmuseum.utk.edu/permex/egypt/egypt.htm

This is our local museum in nearby Spokane,WA.
It is not much for European antiquities but it has a great Native American collection.

Antiquities in online Museum Collections

We can't always visit the great collections that exist around the world. Some museums have taken their stewardship seriously enough to develop great online exhibits of their collections and special exhibitions. Here are a few of my favorites -

Metropolitan Museum:  http://www.metmuseum.org/home.asp

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:  http://www.mfa.org/home.htm

Cleveland Museum of Art:  http://www.clevelandart.org/Explore/

The Vatican Museums do not have a large collection online yet:  http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Visite.html

The Louvre in Paris:  http://www.louvre.fr/

The British Museum:  http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/index.html

Not a museum - but a great collection of slides of Scythian artifacts taken by Prof. Joh Haskins and preserved by the University of Pittsburgh:  http://www.pitt.edu/~haskins/

If you have a link to a great online collection of antiquities - please add it here.
