One can say only that an individual's primary occupational specialty is in the combat arms, but all who serve in places like the Middle East are combatants and deserve to be treated as such.

Not sure where to go with that. Our son was assigned to the 54th Eng. Bat, which is a sapper battalion. He was part of the original invasion. He picked up some schrapnel in his legs, which became a problem later. This lead to the Army withdrawing his combat cert. He's still active, just permanently stationed at Lewis as an instructor.

What part about 4G warfare isn't clear? When convoys are attacked and what should be rear echelon personnel are in the thick of it, there are no front lines and everyone is "combat" personnel. I served twenty years in the Cold War military. While in Europe I was the medical officer for a Mech Infantry battalion. According to the Geneva convention, I was classed as a "non-combatant", but I was expected to serve on the same battlefield against the same enemy as everyone else in the battalion. The only thing "non-combatant" about me was that I wasn't supposed to go looking for someone to shoot, but I was armed anyway, and the Soviets didn't recognize medical personnel as anything other than additional targets. Hence, the statement that the old terminology no longer applies. Your son's classification means that he cannot be assigned in a "combat zone", depending on how that is defined and by whom, but consider this: I am a sole surviving son (Think - Private Ryan) out of three; therefore, I cannot be assigned to a war zone, either. So how exactly did I become the medical officer for a Class I combat unit expected to die within 48 to 72 hours holding off the Soviets? Was the US Army planning on immediately shipping me Stateside the moment the Soviets attacked? No such thing as a "non-combatant".
