Who are this group, are they ethnic Han who are Muslim? or Tibetan-Turkic-Mongol-Manchurian muslims who reside in China under the name Hui?

What is there population and status in Chinease society today?

Some can trace their ancestry to Arab and Persian trader from Tang to Yuan Dynasty whom later intermarried with the local Han Chinese, Mongolian and Turkic people.  Those who adopted the Chinese surname "ma" (from Muslim name Mohammed) are likely to be descendant of such group. Many of them are just simply Han convert. That explains why most of them are indistinguishable from the Han Chinese linguistically, physically and genetically.
