What is Total Quiz
Total Quiz is a contest for knowledge on general history trivia. This name and idea was introduced by KOLOVRAT, a member of HG history forum. First edition of Total Quiz

When will the next Total Quiz be held?
The next Total Quiz will be held in late January in this section of the forum.

How to Play

When the Quiz begins, there will be a web form that will contain the questions for the Quiz. All one needs to do is type in a nickname and start answering the questions. All answers must be submitted to the form - it is strictly forbidden to post your answers in the forum. You may use any source, search engine or reference to help you answer the questions. During the contest, there will be a scoreboard that contains the current scores of the players. Registration on this forum is not required for you to participate. You may submit as many answers as you want per question until you get the question correct, but during each score check, only your most recent answer will be considered.

General Scoring
Total Quiz has two rounds. The first round begins as soon as the contest begins and lasts 24 hours. Each question answered correctly during this time, regardless of how other players score, is worth one (1) point. After 24 hours are over, the second round would precede if necessary should there be any questions unanswered in the first round. Question answered correctly during the second round are worth two (2) points. When the second round is over, the player with the highest amount of points total (including bonus points) wins the contest.

Bonus Scoring for the Question Writers
The questions in Total Quiz are all submitted by various people, many of whom also participate in the Total Quiz. Because players do not get points for answering questions that they submit, they would have fewer questions available to them to answer. Therefore, it is necessary to add a compensating factor to make up for this loss. This compensation bonus is calculated differently for round one and round two, but if you analyze the math, you will see that both equations strive to predict the probable performance the of question writer if all the questions were available to him.

Recent total quizzes have had an additional amendment to guest submitted questions in that at most one guest-submitted can be used for the quiz from users who are expected to participate in the quiz.

Quiz Procedures

1. Rounds: The first round should last 48 hours. If there are unanswered questions after the first round, a 24-hour second round will be held when ready. Round two should contain only questions unanswered in round one and with a hint attached to the question (the hint is automatically shown by the quiz engine).

2. Scoring: Questions answered in round one are with 1 point. Questions answered in round two are woth 2 points. Participants do not receive points for answering any questions which they submitted. If the quiz has questions written by participants, bonus points are given for authorship of questions. See below for bonus point procedures.

3. Scoring interval: In general, scores should be updated at approximately four-hour intervals. The purpose of this interval is to prevent excessive guessing and minimize timezone advantage for players who reside in timezones close to moderator's. If a user has submitted mulitple responses to a question during an interval, only the most recent answer should be considered.

4. Question clarifications : Quiz moderators may modify questions during the middle of the quiz at their descretion if there is sufficient reason to warrent such an action.

5. Procedures: Standard quiz procedures for setting up and running the Quiz is outlined above in the "documetation" section.

Bonus points: Quiz prticipants who have submitted a question appearing on the quiz are not eligible to receive points by answer their own question, but may receive bonus points. The bonus point system is given by the formulas below. To assign bonus points, open up the quiz page, enter the username of the participant, submit an entry for that question and assign the bonus point as you would for a normal question response.

Bonus points for round one questions are given as follows:

Only questions that are not advancing to round two are elegible to receive a round one bonus.

Example: The Quiz has 20 questions total. The question contributor has answered 13 questions and has 2 questions appearing on the quiz. Three questions are advancing to round two, including one of the questions submitted by the author. The bonus per question is: 13/(20-(3+1)) = .81 points for each question, but only one of the two contributed questions is eligible for the bonus point because one of the questions is advancing. Therefore, the author's score at the end of round one is 13.81

Bonus points for round two questions are given as follows:

Where:
P (total Round 1, question author)
is the total number of points earned by the question contributor in round one, including round one bonus points.
P (total Round 1, highest) is the total number of points earned by the question contributor in round one, including round one bonus points.
P* (highest of authored round 2) is the amount of points earned from the contributed questions by the participant who performed the best among those questions of the contributor
N (umber of authored questions in round 2) is the number of questions by the contributo in round two

Example: The question contributor earned 16 points in round one. The highest amount of round one points of any participant is 19. The question contributor has one question in round two, which is answered by at least one contestant. The bonus given to that one question is: (16/19)(2/1) = 1.68

Example: The question contributor earned 16 points in round one. The highest amount of round one points of any participant is 18. The question contributor has two question in round two, the first of which is answered only by one contestant and the second of which is answered only by a different contestant. The bonus given to each question is: (16/18)(2/2) = .88. The contributor will receive .88 for each round two question, for a total of 1.76 total for both questions.
