I find it bad to say any person in any army is weak minded or in weak spirit. I was in the American army for 11 years in Desert Storm,Somalia,Kosovo and Afgahnistan. We may have hated where we were and wanted to go home but when the mission time came or your life was on the line we were ready and very very capable of handling anything. The bonding and friendships made you fight to protect out of instinct and pride. "In the heat of battle it ceases to be an idea for which we fight. Or a flag. Rather we fight for the man on our left, and we fight for the man on our right. And when armies are scattered and the empires fall away, all that remains is the memory of those precious moments that we spent sided by side."

The complexities of war are so overshadowed by a couple mishaps. A plane my get shot down or crash from malfunction but this is after how many sorties? A convoy may run into trouble or get ambushed yet we forget about the 1000's of other succesful ones. We could kill 70-100 of the enemy but if one american is killed its considered a loss in some peoples eyes. Whats funny is that people put down the U.S. but every country in the world right now is taking notes and learning from the U.S. as they do real world things. The same goes with the British and other Nato countries currently down range in Afgahnistan. The flexible structure and training of these armies alow them to adapt and change quite well.

The U.S. army isnt small either. Its not built on manpower however. Our sheer amount of equipment makes it quite impressively large. Look at how many helicopters, tanks, trucks etc it has and its far from small.
"An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind"

Gundamor, what you point out actually is the lack of deciciveness of the american people to go (to sent their boys) to war.

And you are right about fighting for your companion, but the same happens with your enemy. And the difference is that your enemy is ALSO fighting for his country. History has shown this many times, that the ideal for which someone is fighting plays an important role. In the case of the US perhaps not so much in the performance of the army, but certainly in the tolerance on losses.

Defeat allows no explanation
Victory needs none.
It insults the dead when you treat life carelessly.

Yes and then looked how many men the Germans lost. More than 35,000. Aside from that it wasnt just air power, overstretch played a key part as did new German technology and the inhospitable terrain and the amazing sucess of Skorzenys commandos.

The Allied armies were not dependant upon air power but it was a major factor.

I picked the British because no country accomplished so much with so few.

In World War I, the BEF got mauled in the Schlieffen Plan but delayed the German advance enough times (wasn't even that many) for the French to win the Marne and were primarily responsible for blockading Germany and starving it into surrender.

In World War II, the British were along against Germany for nine months and were the first to successfully defend themselves against German aggression. Britiain defeated the Japanese in Burma and the Germans in Africa and it wasn't until the invasion of France where American troops completely outnumbered British in the frontlines against Germany.
Like great battles? How about when they're animated for easy viewing?
