"Unpossible"!

Not so impossible considering that Icelanders have plenty of practice throwing snowballs at eachother. Good sport actually. Would like to see more coverage of it at night. Ok UvH. Go Iceland!

All the while Turkey is falling flat in every event it's in except for the occasional tiny tot chick lifting a heavy load for silver.

Badminton is fun to watch. It's like a messed up version of tennis meets volleyball. Slow enough for dinks and fast enough for spiking.

Fencing looks cool. You blink you get poked and some colorful lights go off showing that you got nicked in the process. They do it till someone reaches 15 or is it 21?

Swimming is intense. Cali girl Caughlin beat her Kangaroo nemesis in the 100m backstroke. Phelps is going to pass Spitz. Another huge Aussie chick looks tough to beat (don't know her name but huge Aussie chick does her justice).

Basketball. Need more of that. US-Angola. Really? Do we have to? Oh, alright. Kobe get yourself a cola and sit down. Labron have an eggroll as we watch Tayshun and the 2n'd stingers put on the hits. US 97 (while taking it easy) -Angola 76.

Them US boys on the mats did some fine gymnastics. Earned them a bronze. Not bad.

Then there's tennis queens Venus and Serena. The unstoppable Williams sisters.

Indeed it was great day for both U.S. and Germany.  Phelps got closer to his 8 gold dream.  Korean phenom Park Tae Hwan took the silver.  Now I'm really wondering what if Phelps competed in 400m freestyle.

Congrats to Ulrich for the Icelandic Handball team! Cheers Is this only time you were cheering against Germany?   I enjoy watching Handball myself.  It's got different elements of Basketball, Football and Hockey.

Just wondering, if Field Hockey in the Olympics, Cricket should too?   Or if baseball is in Cricket should too?  Either way I think Cricket should be in.  May be Rugby too.

The Chinese gymnasts were pretty impressive.  The Americans did well like Seko said especially considering they were missing their best gymnast.

Russian wrestlers and Austrailian female swimmers got their Olymipcs campaign a big lift.

Oh! North Korean Pak Hyon Suk won a gold for women's weightlifting.  i'm sure kim Jung Il will make a movie about her now.  Maybe Victoria Beckham playing her?

Swimming lifted U.S. ahead of South Korea in medal counts as expected.  Strong serges from Germany, Russia, Austrailia etc are expected.

I admit that the fireworks at the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics were impressive, and hard to top...

...but just you wait and see what Al-Qaeda have got lined up for London in 2012.

I'm sure the Brits will be able to CGI in some fireworks just as well as the Chinese apparently did. Clap
Maybe even snag a cute 7 year old as well to lip sync.

Whats up with medal standings. France has 9 medals and is 20th. Behind teams with 1. Even in a point system one gold would not equate to 9 medals.

Chock up another one for Phelps with of course another world record. go go speedo suits.

^^Yes its crazy the amount of records being broken, especially when its by five seconds.  That in mind Phelps just keeps winning.

Wow! American ladies at softball. Intense pitching, awsome hitting and a rather nice display of feminine physique (except for the chub-a-dub power hitting transgender hopefuls).

What is with womens' Gymnastics? 10 year old Chinese girls, American blunders and Russia nowhere to be found. The American girls did well in some and choked big time on the floor excersize. Sure, a couple of injuries prior but still! Who can deny the winning tradition of the communist system? Gold medal machinery at it's finest.

...more Phelps medals...(yawn). Spitz should have been invited to transfer his mojo in person. Blame the IOC or China for that.

What the Icelandic press wrote:

Iceland Beats World Champion in Handball at Olympics

The Icelandic men’s handball team beat Germany, the current world champion, 33-29 at the Beijing Olympics yesterday. The Icelandic handball team now has four points in qualifying group B and is the only team in that group without a loss.

“This victory is a positive sign of us being a good team,” captain Ólafur Stefánsson told reporters after the game, Morgunbladid reports.

“It was an amazing victory because it is not every day that we beat the world champion at the Olympics. It doesn’t get much sweeter than this,” Iceland’s coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson told Fréttabladid.

“I am very satisfied with how we played and except for the beginning, everything worked out as planned. The fight went great, we were aggressive and they couldn’t handle it,” Gudmundsson said.

Iceland will play against South Korea tomorrow, the Asian handball champion. South Korea beat Denmark, the European champion, yesterday.

I'm sure having Jennie Finch helps out fan support for softball.Embarrassed

Despite all the age gossip, the bottom line on the gymnast team is they tanked when it mattered. They were capable of winning for sure. The podium pictures are somewhat funny though. Someone mentioned that they looked like the offensive line for the 49ers compared to their gold medal counterparts.LOL

What happened?  I was entertaining a lady friend. Did they play it yet?  It must be still a few hours from now hah?  I will bet on aaahhhh Iceland.  I don't wanna jinx the Koreans like I did to a few teams(mostly France) in the Euro 08.  Second I can be happy for Ulrich if Iceland win and I picked the winner.   If Korea wins I can act like it was a sweet surprise.Wink Last but the most important, the humility will bring me good mojo for the Koreans.

Looks like Iceland already beat Russia and Germany, Korea has beaten Denmark but lost Germany.  So there you go, I have a good reason to believe that humility is the best policy for now. (but once the game is over and if Korea won.....  all I'm saying is, it's time to dunk the clown in a pool of Kimchi!) ClownWink

On a more serious note,  Did anyone notice Georgia in the leader board?  Two golds in one day?  Were they expected?  I'm not trying to politicize it by bring it up. But when athletes from countries in turmoil like war or natural disaster, overachieve when the world is watching, it's kinda cool no matter which country.  Like Iraq winning AFC championship last year.

Sorry guys, when I disturb your Phelpsomania. These flood of records, loughable. What's the reason. The wonderdress? So why Phelps is swimming without it? The dolphin swimming during the start phase and the turns? The others practice it as well. So what's his real secret, a special and unknown kind of EPO or does he already practice genetic doping? If Phelps would be a Chinese swimmer or a White Russian everybody would expect him to take doping. But Western athletes don't do this, it's of course the spirit of the free world that gives them wings to go for goldWink.

Doping is not a Western/Eastern thing; some countries have a history of doping, some don't, but geographically they are quite evenly spread. Wink

Doping was very professional used in the former communist block. If we look at the results of especially the Russians, the Germans from GDR and the Romanians there can't be a doubt and especially in GDR we know the doping practice very detailed. When I was a little boy I added the GDR results and the FRG results together. We were the best....but now I know perhaps each GDR medall was a result of doping and I can't say how many of the FRG medalls were it too. But usually we say, perhaps only in Germany, I don't know: the East is doping, we not. But I agree with you, some countries have a doping history, some not. My doctor allways says, health is an unknown desease. So countries with no doping history are perhaps just countries were doping hunters weren't successful till now. I am convinced that there are sport disciplines were doping is common and others were it is not. Swimming, athletics, weight lifting, cycling and a lot more are doping disciplines for sure. The USA are the top nation in some of it, Marion Jones, Kelly White e.g or think of the female top US-swimmer, I forgot her name, who was tested positive.

I think it's alot about how doping is perceived also. We had only one big doping case, Ludmila Enquist (a Russian, former Narozhilenko) who won several gold medals for USSR and Sweden in hurdles. After she won her golds for Sweden in the 90s she was much celebrated -  she later was tested positively for doping (during her new, bobsleighing career in 2001...) and she was immidiately frozen out to the limit that she didn't dare to show herself in public and eventually she and her husband had to leave the country. I'm not sure if this reaction is common in other places also.

Yes, that's right. There is a difference between countries in the way they act with doping athletes. But perhaps Ludmilla was what we call a "Bauernopfer" in German. I can't find it in my dictionary. Sorry even in my Swedish one. Now they can say: Look, the system is working! In some days we'll see some Swedish athletes in High jump and women's heptathlon. Are they clean? This is the most terrible effect of doping for me. We cannot be no longer sure that an athlete is clean. Every record, every medall we have to ask, if it was correct or not. This is sad. Wouldn't it be great if we could cheer without a doubt?
