This is an old thread,
There are only two famous people from Canberra:
Michael Bevan, former Australian one-day batsman and current captain of tasmania.
George Gregain, captain of the Wallabys, the Australian rugby team.
They also both played for the western creek cricket club.
Also George Lazenby from On Her Majesties Secret Service, comes
from Queanbeyan which would be a part of Canberra except its
technically in New South Wales and we don't want it. Sure it was the
second worse bond film, but as he came from Queanbeyan, Lazenby did a
excellent job

I didn't think anyone came from Canberra.
If they did, would they go back?

Yi Sunshin. He probably rivaled and, to some extent, surpassed Nelson since he didn't get any government fund.... and Britain was concentrating all their power to navy at Nelson's time... Korea couldn't reinforce Yi Sunshin since mainland of Korea was overrun by Japanese invaders...
It's like Nelson fighting in sea when Napoleon's army were powning the British forces in Britain herself.

Most famous Chileans have been born in province. However we have one important scientist and phylosopher born in Santiago.
Francisco Javier Varela Garca (Santiago, September 7, 1946 May 28, 2001, Paris) was a Chilean biologist and philosopher who, together with his teacher Humberto Maturana, is best known for introducing the concept of autopoiesis to biology.
He is the father of actress Leonor Varela, who is known by some people out there.

Patrick Kavanagh, poet. Born in Enniskillen, which is a few miles from where I live, in a county of 50,000 people. Quite proud of that. You'll see a statue of him by the canal in Dublin.

This man is off historical significance though and makes me far prouder than some grumpy old alcoholic poet who brings the name of monghan down, If any of ye history heads are interested in a true Irish warrior that struggled for his nation his is an interesting tale. A true Monaghan hero, sorry to be getting so sentimenatal but If only there were more like him
Edit, Apologies
The link wont work for some reason and im directly copying and pasting the url, strange! Just look for Fergal O' Hanlon and you'll find him

You f**king clown, didn't even provide the link:
Ah yeah, you actually do support the Ra. Forgot about that. Most people come out of that phase when they're about ten years old, shows your level of maturity I suppose though.

Don't use expletives please, It shows the level of maturity of a 10 year old , better still your link doesn't work either, surprise surprise silly little boy, like I said if you copy and paste the url it doesn't work so don't question me like that again you fool, Im a clown tut tut.
Anyway, If foreign forces invaded your land, deprived your people of a fair vote, raped, beated and murdered your neighbours, intimidated you at gunpoint everyday and flew helicopters over your house, colluded with local gangs against you, murdered all your friends and family when you tried to peacefully protes against these injustices (Bloody Sunday), Interned your people without trial even though they were innocent etc. etc., I'd say you'd be pretty cheesed, that's why I respect men like Fergal O' Hanlon, I suppose these brave men where as mature as 10 year olds too. Why are you trying to rise this topic anyway, Im only a newbie unlike you wise one but one thing I do know is that such mindless arguments and debates over political grievances are not appreciated on this board by the mods and regular posters because they only stir emotions of hatred and bigotry, this is a history forum so I think it's best to leave your petty little jibes out.

Of course they would . George Gregan still lives here I think, Bevan lives in Tasmanina. I also forgot to mention that Jackie Chan's parents live here too, they chose to retire here.

My hometown is Maidstone, which has had a few interesting figures.
One of the leaders of the Peasant's revolt, the mad proto-socialist priest John Bull came from here. Lord Wyatt who led a revolt against Mary I's marrying the Spanish King came from Maidstone and began his revolt here. George Washington's family had their origins in Maistone too, his great grand uncle is buried in the main church. Disraeli wasn't born here but he won his first seat in Parliament in the constituency of Maidstone.
As for my university location, Birmingham, well there have been a few important scientists. Matthew Boulton, James Watt and Joseph Priestly all were all born here. Other scientific luminaries of the late 18th century were here as the city was the home of the linar society, hence one could find Erasmus Darwin, Arkwright, Wedgwood, Wilkinson and Benjamin Franklin often in the city. As for authors... there was Tolkein and Conan Doyle. Not many political figures except the Chamberlains, especially Joseph and Neville.
