At feasts the nobility ate "five bird roasts:" a sausage stuffed into a thrush stuffed into a pigeon stuffed into a chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a goose. These have made a comeback recently as an alternative to the standard Christmas turkey, although these days only three birds are used: a turkey, a duck and a chicken

Exotic birds like peacocks and guinea fowl were often eaten at feasts. These were roasted and their tail feathers reattached

Henry VIII may have also suffered from diabetes from eating so much rich food. This may explain why he put on so much weight later in life as he was unable to properly digest sugar

Coming up for auction is this cookbook by the "Heston Blumenthal of the 1700s." Popular ingredients in those days included almonds and oysters http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2277995/Hedgehog-almonds-gut-turtle-Cookbook-Heston-Blumenthal-1700s-century-auctioned.html

Even today the toffs only eat the rarest and most expensive foods. Charles recently sent two of his rare breed pigs to Italy to be turned into ham in a medieval cellar: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2279505/Prince-Charles-packed-prize-pigs-Italy--came-ham-costing-80-lb.html

| Diabetes, atherosclerotic heart disease, probably the complete closure of
most of his coronary arteries, cirrhosis of the liver, long-term
alcoholic dementia, gout, probably had a prostate the size of his
liver...in the painting we can clearly see swollen fingers indicating
peripheral vascular disease.

Lamprey Pie To make a Lamprey Pie Take
your Lamprey and gut him, and take away the black string in the back,
wash him very well, and dry him, and season him with Nutmeg, Pepper and
Salt, then lay him into your Pie in pieces with Butter in the bottom,
and some Shelots and Bay Leaves and more Butter, so close it and bake
it, and fill it up with melted Butter, and keep it cold, and serve it in
with some Mustard and Sugar
