Topic: Polish and Hungarian costumes 1500-1800 Posted: 08-Feb-2007 at 07:24 |
It is known fact that Polish and Hungarian (and even Ottoman) costumes were quite similar in that period. But I'd like to compare them. Can you put here photos of these costumes?
Below is an example from Poland. This is a painting of Antoni Stanisław Szczuka (1654-1710).

Here are 3 pictures (Polish, Hungarian and Ottoman riders) made about 1650. Can you solve a riddle, which rider is from which country?

the right answer is:
1 and 5 - Poles
2, 3, 4 - Hungarians
1 and 5 - details of the painting showing the entry of Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł into Rome in 1680 with the embassy to Pope Innocent XI, atributed to P. Bloemen
1 - Piazza Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. Loaded camels of the embassy
5 - A winged rider in hussar fashion
2 - Hungarian hussars in tournament book done in 1557 for arc-duke Ferdynand Tyrolski
3 - Hungarian hussars in "Civitates orbis terrarum" by J. Braun and A. Hoghenberg, Colony 1618.
4 - Hungarian noble in hussarian dress, illustration: Abraham de Bruyn, Colony 1587

I always thought that Radziwiłł was Lithuanian/Pospolitian
But in any case clothes could be from Poland

I think so too.
BTW, IMHO it is a big loss for human civilization that modern dresses in the world are so similar to each other.

I believe the cone-shaped turban-like thing being worn in the Radziwill picture was inspired by Tatar headgear. Or, that could actually be a Tatar being depicted.
Also, where did the camels come from?

Maybe they are spoils of war? In 1673 Sobieski defeated Ottomans at Chocim and soldiers of P-L Commonwealth took huge spoils of war after the battle.
But there is also another possibility. I know that the Poles used camels in 1635 in Royal Prussia and in 1633 (Ossoliński's legation to the Pope to Rome). While camels in 1635 could be spoils of war after the battle of Kamieniec Podolski (October 1633), camels of Ossoliński's legation (September 1633) probably were bought (from Ottomans? from Tartars?).
