I would be delighted to receive ANY information on, or reference to, the continuing use of a bton as a symbol of military authority in Europe in the Merovingian/Carolingian period.
It appears to be carried by William in the Bayeux Tapestry. Look at Crouch's Image of Aristocracy, I think there is a more detailed treatment of wands and staffs there (can't get to my copy just at the moment).
