Topic: Best Free Kick Taker (among active) Posted: 19-Sep-2007 at 15:21 |
Watching Pirlo's free kick goal against Benfica yesterday reminded me what agreat dead ball kicker he is. Pirlo is gotta be up there with many great free kickers in the world. But there are so many great free kickers in the world and there are more polls like this about them in the internet. So I limited to only active players and did some research on other polls to come up with these names. I just wanna know what AE forumers think about them.
Beckham - Only thing he does well but very well. Ronaldinho - Better in shorter distances, but then again WC 02 vs England. Juninho, Riquelme, Nakamura - Beckham like ranges and bends. Totti, Gerrad, Pirlo - Power shots, better in 30-40m ranges. Mihajlovic, Roberto Carlos - Superpower shots 45m+ don't bother them. Veron - Perhaps better at hitting someone's forehead.
Honorable mention: C. Ronaldo, Figo, Lampard, Giggs, Ballack, Xabi Alonso, Henry, Van Persie, Sneijder, Vander Vaart, Van Hooijdonk, Joaquin, Petrov, Diego, Seedorf, Stankovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Simao, Roerio Ceni, Rivaldo, Blanco, Recoba, Alex......
I didn't include guys like Zidane, Platini, Zico, Luis Fernandez, Matthaus, Puskas, Pele, Maradona, Boniek, Guulit, Hiquita because they are no longer active but feel free to mention anybody I forgot. Also talk about your favorite free kick moment.

A not particulary specified player of a local senoior league of reykjavik, who recently scored a gorgeous goal in a match of minor importance.
The few attendant viewers were entused and praised this player of german origin.

I voted for Ronaldinho - I watched him score some gorgeous goals off of dead balls last year.

Why is Mihajlovic among the active? He is certainly the best among this list and maybe best ever. He once scored a hattrick of freekicks in a game for Lazio.
Juninho and Nakamura are to fear but my vote goes to Pirlo.

Did Mihajlovic retire? Woops, I did not know that. No wonder Stankovic took over that duty for Inter. I just thought that either Mihajlovic is injured or not in form. Thanx for the correction.

Yes, they did. I remember watching it a couple of years back. But it was more like a charity event than actual competition. Zidane was only the superstar that got invited(or accepted the invitation). I think some Turkish guy won. I can't think of the name either. I do remember Benjamin(Real Betis at the time), Petrov and some Chinese guy did well inthat competition.

It's kind of ironic, but the Spanish newspaper El Pais published an article about the differences between Juninho and Ronaldinho. It was an interesting article. The article basically came to the conclusion that Juninho has a greater percentage of goals in dead ball situations, but has specialized in that particular field. El Pais ripped into Ronaldinho, saying that he uses dead ball situations to make up for his sometimes lethargic play (the topic de jour of the Spanish press).

I just quoted myself for the first time. It feels weird like Micheal J Fox looking at himself in 'Back to the Future'. This King Kang of Mu will address the court in third person from here on. Anyway I just found a Wiki article on that competition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Kick_Masters Ugur Yildirim of Heerenveen won. I thought he was a Turkish though. But he's a Dutch apparently. Doesn't the name sound like Turkish though? Maybe naturalized?

He is a Turk with Dutch citizenship. And you are right, Ugur is a Turkish name.
