Topic: Medieval Movies... Posted: 12-Jun-2006 at 23:18 |
I'm sure this topic has been made a lot, but what are some good movies about the medieval period? I don't care too much if it's fictional or slightly fantasy.
Sorry if there is another topic like this, but I have been searching the forum for a while. I never knew this place existed. I'm glad I stumbled upon it.
I was looking around for plans to build a ballista and I found this board.

The 1982 miniseries about Marco Polo. Hard to find, but surprisingly good.

Those are some I haven't seen. I have seen all the rest, but I don't own them.
What do you guys think of Timeline? I know it's not really medieval, but the book was really good.

You haven't heard of ''The Name of the Rose''! That's pretty strange I thought it was a very well-known movie. Soc Connery was starring.
As for Flesh&Blood it was directed by Paul Verhofen, not quite known film but for me is the best medieval movie that was ever made.
Pit and the Pendelum, well I saw it only once by luck, it's an ok movie about the Inquisition.

"A Knights Tale"- Nonsense but highly enjoyable.
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail"- What? It's Medieval!
"Alexander Nevsky"- Beautiful film.
"Ivanhoe"
"First Knight"- Richard Gere...god this is awful, I rooted for Sean Connery and the villans only....
"Prince of Thieves"- Oh no...please God no.....
"Les Visiteurs"- Awesome, go Jean Reno! And his nose...!

Well, I can advise you to see two old Bulgarian movies-
1. "Khan Asparuh"- amazing movie, definately a must-see, even only for the scene where 60 000 bulgarian soldiers are dressed and armored as byzantines and march on the field! There is a export version for the USA, "681st- Greatness of Khan", though it only resembles the original movie, which if I'm not wrong was in 2 three-hour parts.
2. "Ivailo"- again, pretty old movie (1964) but it's very nice, in colour, with massive and well done battles. Ivailo defeated the mongols, a rather obscured fact in history.

Aside from Kingdom of Heavens "equality" teachings (working with the peasents- yeah right!). It's OK and the battles are good though I wish they had shown Hattin.
Joan of Arc is awful. All Brits are evil (and ugly too...). Boring really.
Braveheart is nonsense. Enjoyable but for the fact that so many Americans believe it as truth....
